Whilst you do get flooding in summer (I've been there in July when the incoming tide flooded the square) the traditional period for Venice flooding is November to March

Recent Flooding:
Over 80% of Venice has been submerged in water due to a combination of factors.
The city experienced a third major flood in less than a week, with water levels reaching 150 cm (5 feet) during the most recent event
Earlier, on Tuesday, the water level had surged to an alarming 187 cm, the highest in half a century
Causes of Flooding:
The recent floods result from a combination of high spring tides and a meteorological storm surge driven by strong sirocco winds blowing northeastward across the Adriatic Sea.
When these two events coincide, it leads to what is known as “Acqua Alta” (high water) in Venice

Historic Landmarks Affected:

St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace (once the residence of Venice’s rulers during its independent republic) are among the historic sites impacted by the floods

i agree with Peter park away but try to take the canal bus in on the grand canal. It is smelly and a total tourist trap but beautiful. We went once & I wouldn't go back jus tbecause of the rip off tourism. The same withSpoleto a gorgeous mountain town & peaceful vs Florence.

As I get older I hate crowded places but I am glad I was in Florene & Venice once.

We travelled to venice a few times back in the day .... it is a great city ... the reports of how crowded it is does put me off a bit these days ... however, it does have a lot to compensate ... if you go hang about and walk it at night ... the back alleys and smaller canal-sides are incredibly atmospheric after dark ... you can imagine cloaked figures bent on intrigue at every bend .... it still rates as one of the safest of all European cities day or night.

We really enjoyed Venice. You do have to think differently. Coffee in St Marks Square is expensive but if you view half the cost as allocated to renting a seat with a view of the square then it feels a better price. Find a small restaurant in a back street for lunch or dinner and prices are verging on reasonable.

When we were last there, a Gondola ride was €85 for four of us but well worth it.

A water taxi trip to the airport from the city is a brilliant experience - like being on a highway of fast boats.

I have been fortunate to enjoy Venice in all four seasons, the most memorable being winter. Mist over the canals, glimpses of that "Don't Look Now" character, and the restaurants that were open were charging sensible prices and seemed genuinely glad of the business. I'm not usually an eco-warrior, but I have a pal that I was with at Uni and who lives in Venice that definitely is. He convinced me that mega cruise ships sailing into the heart of Venice was the worst possible idea, and I'm pleased to see that Norwegian Cruise Line have recently deleted Venice from their itineraries.

As other have mentioned, as you are on a road trip I would give Venice a miss. It's an amazing place but there's a time and it's not with a car in tow. My thoughts would be to bypass Venice and head up towards the Dolomites with their fabulous roads and scenery. Whatever you do, it'll be a fantastic trip that you both treasure for years to come.
