Does anyone have any real experience of the effectiveness - or otherwise - of those little sonic devices/whistles that can be easily attached to the front of vehicles?

Do you mean to scare of animals? I got one to get rid of pigeons in our garden. They just strolled up & looked at it.
In the garage I have a plug in device to keep out rodents. Touchwood it works

I think he is highlighting the small "whistle" devices you can have fitted to the car which is meant to make them nervous and so not come out in front of you on the road.

Something like this - they seem to vary from £3 to £300?

I have often wondered the same thing. Where I come off the A34 there always seems to be a dead grouse and in some cases deer. Having been in a car that hit a deer it is horrible and I never want to repeat it again. As an aside I was told that they also tend to cause neighbourhood dogs to react in various ways. Being able to turn it on/off as you enter/leave town might be helpful.

Yes Alistair, I meant those little devices, not much bigger than a referees whistle, that emit a high pitched note - inaudible to the human ear - when on the move. I put them on my tin-top when travelling up and down to Sheringham regularly to visit my aged mother when she was alive. The Thetford Forest area was teeming with deer and other relatives had had many near misses on the roads in that area. I never saw an animal after fixing the whistles to the car but that may be pure coincidence!
I am going to add a couple to the underside of the number plate box on the Plus 4 as there is nothing to loose and they can't be seen. I think that they cost £10 for a pack of 4.

Can't help, but I bought one from a garage in Braemar when I drove through deer-infested Deeside regularly for work ... never fitted it 🤦‍♂️

May still have it in a drawer ... can send it to you free if you want ... you can report on it's deer-scaring properties 🙂

Just like a little red plastic pencil-sharpener looking thing I recall

Thank you K but I have a couple left over when I bought a multi-pack for other family member's Christmas stockings! Will certainly report back in due course.

If anyone does have experience either way I would welcome hearing it as well.

Up in Perthshire a deer hit me back in 1973 when driving my old Spitfire. Snowing and it jumped at the headlights. Made a mess of the car. Maybe I should invest in one, loads of muntjacs here and one is the same colour as tarmac, hard to see early morning and it loves standing in the road.

I remember comments about "deer whistles" in the American motorcycle mags (Road Rider was a favourite read when I was still at sea). The majority of comments were that they had no effect.
Perhaps the deer are less affected over there?
