Hi folks Bit of a long shot here, I think. A few years ago I got an Ashcroft R380 box with a Quaife straight cut gearkit in it. It's had very little use, because after I did a whole car rebuild I wanted more of a quiet tourer ... or as quiet as you can go with a strong 5litre with straight through exhaust. The 380 replaced the LT77, C suffix (from 1982). The guys who did the swap also had a look at the LT77 and said it was fine, and then they gave it back to me as a big box of bits. Well, I guess they had a good look, but it caught me by surprise. I should have been more specific.
I just went back to Ashcroft to get a 380 with helical gears, and they told me they don't do a 2wd 380 any more. They also said they don't do a master rebuild kit for the LT77 either. On their website it says they start at D suffix, and I suspect it's 4WD only these days..
I've chased around for a rebuilt or even just good R380 and I can't find one. I'd consider a Tremec but don't want to fiddle with modifying the metal cover and its new leather or even all the space age soundproofing - which I might add, doesn't seem to have done very much.

I appreciate that the cheapest solution is earplugs but I'd like one more go at getting a 380.

I need to say also that the Ashcroft straight cut gearbox is fantastic - positive, fast change and a screaming 80mph second gear. Not quite as good on a picnic though.

Can anyone suggest where to get a good 380, or recommend another approach?

Cheers Terry

I thought one of the hill climber / racers was selling one on here last year. His competition car had a T5 fitted.

I am pretty sure I have read in the past that someone makes a conversion plate to allow fitment of a Toyota Celica box to the +8....?

Thank you for the replies. I'm following up. Has anybody had a gearbox from Powertrain Transmissions (Tony)?

Of course getting a box is part of the battle - they need to be willing to box it up and send it to Oz. Ashcroft did it, it worked although I did check to see if the sticky out bits got bent. (Nothing surprises me, I bought a Tillett carbon seat once and I was promised "they" couldn't damage it unless they ran over it with a forklift - guess what?)

Hi Terry, try emailing robtoon@aol.com.
He has a R380 rebuilt by DR transmissions which he may split. Advert in Miscellany Feb24, pg 63
