Changing my wife's Tin Top. In UK
Trying to keep her reg. Is there any way of not having to replace the number plates prior to trade in?
seems I have to apply to remove the plates,& get a new V5 & replacement plates. Then transfer the registration on retention to the new car, which has been pre registered.
trouble is I only have 10 days.

I recently did something similar and it was completed on-line and, more or less, straight away.

Your 'old' car will probably get the original registration back - so if you have saved the old plates, jobs an orange root vegetable

V5 arrived by post in a couple of days ( ) but attaching registration was immediate.

No guarantees with the above as there are sometimes unexpected delays, but perhaps worth checking out....?

I suspect just putting the reg on retention in order to keep it, then once you have the other vehicle at some stage just transfer the reg to it. Dependant on the dealership where you may be buying the replacement vehicle from, they may be able to have the change over carried out in one move for you if you are trading in and IF the reg is not deemed to be high value...
Been through the a similar process and the retention method was the route I took.. The process of initiation of the retention can be done on line very quickly, though the paperwork can take a while longer, but as long as the DVLA have the data the plates can be changed over and the vehicles used.. Assuming you have the original plates for the vehicles involved... I tend to keep the originals for just such circumstances..

When you take the old car in to the dealer you can put your private plate on retention, on line, at the dealership.
You must then wait for the (old car) V5 to be posted out to you, usually a couple of days, you then have to get it to the dealer asap so they can sell the car as they now own it.
You will get the V5 for your new car through in a couple of days, as well as, separately, the retention document for the private plate.
When you have both V5 and retention form you can transfer the private plate on to the new car on line.

The dealer may want to charge you a refundable deposit to 'motivate' you return the V5 to them asap.....

this week, plate on retention (on line), new car on Wednesday, V5 applied for (on line). Monday new V5.
Just 5 days inc a weekend. Super fast service

I've always received the new V5C within two or three days of putting the number on retention.

Take the number off the car (online) two or three days before you're due to change cars. The retention document will be with you prior to trade-in and the dealer can have the new plates ready and fitted.

Your V5C should take two or three days to arrive at which time you can hand it over to the dealer.

Worst case scenario the dealer has to wait a couple of days for you to hand over the V5C.

Also note that you do have a day or two grace to put the new number on your car after taking the old one off.

Hopefully picking up her car on 28 th. Will apply on 24th. & hopefully dealer can manufacture the new plates for both cars.

Cost is £80 to place the private registration on retention (as of March 2024).

The V778 is what you will receive in the post. This entitles you to hold the plate for up to 10-years, at no further cost, and not assign it to a vehicle. After 10-years, you have to either pay another retention fee or the plate goes back into the system and can be repurchased by someone else.

In your case, this isn't relevant because you plan to reassign it, once you have the new V5C in your name. As has been mentioned above, worth asking the dealer to supply you with a set of plates in your wife's registration as this will save you the hassle of having them made up.

Agreed on the general seed and efficiency of the DVLA for general processes these days.

One thing I would add would be to ensure the dealer is clear is to note on the sale document that the private plate is not included and will be transferred off with you retaining title. Most dealers are used to this happening and will not baulk.

I would definately take the registration off via the DVLA website before handing the car over, plenty of people have lost plates because the dealer has "forgotten" to do this and then sold the car and so on.
At least if you do it yourself you know its taken care of, and then the new V5 becomes their problem so to speak as they are reliant on you and not the other way around - which is always the best way with these things

Of course there are plenty of dealers that will do it all for you no problems, but you always add in a risk factor when you let someone else do it..
