Phone in advance and ask them as it often puts them on the back foot.

According to Martin Lewis, leaving it to the last minute will put other companies' quotes up too.

"The cheapest time to get quotes is 20 to 26 days ahead of your renewal date – cover becomes more expensive the closer you get.

We analysed over 70 million quotes from the four biggest comparison sites and found the average quote made on the day of renewal was £1,198, or £694 23 days earlier. That's a huge difference of £504. You might not see savings as large as those, but the principle still stands.

It's based around risk – buying it a few weeks before you need it suggests you're more careful and organised, while leaving it to the last minute means you're seen as higher risk, with some insurers telling us they've seen a direct link between drivers who leave sorting their insurance to the last moment and a higher number of claims.

Update on my quote, G & W not to bad but still higher that Finch by £40, my renewal with Finch is £380 ( that includes £20 renewal fee) 5000 miles, plus valuation of £42000.

Just been on the Classic Line, quoting me £298, 5000 miles, Valuation of £4200, (but either get in value done by a independent valuer, or there in house valuer )

Mal, I've been using Classic Line for 3 years now on two older vehicles, after being recommended by one of the Mini Clubs, service has been great, office is I think in Leicester, the paperwork is always error free, agreed valuations sorted promptly thumbs

Have been with Gott and Wynne since 2016. Just over 5 years ago I had a major claim. Barry Wynne took personal control over ensuing negotiations with the insurer as the agreed value had been increased by a well known dealer earlier on the very day of the claim.

The full agreed insurance value, which reflected market value, was paid within 4 weeks.

Since then G&W have consistently offered very reasonable premiums and excellent service. Consequently they retain my business.
