Having recently bought a 1947 Series 1 4/4 I am still finding my way around. Can anyone tell me how the gearbox oil level is checked and topped up if necessary?

Sorry I have no experience of your car, GoMoG.com is a fantastic resource, other than that generally gearbox and axle fill point also acts as the level..?

There is a Morgan Four owners 1936-1981 workshop Manual from Brooklands Books OWM 796, which might be handy to have, though no mention of gearbox oil level that I can see.

As for the correct grade of oil... A bit of research required though there are specialist oil suppliers for classic vehicles that might be worth a try..?

Good advice! I thought I'd use the opportunity Luddite affords to give some general information about gomog.

[Gomog does not publicly cover 4/4 Series I. I took everything specific to it down many years ago..as I did with Aeros and post 2004 cars (saving Roadsters which
I host [i]but do not contribute to for the Roadster forum. In the case of first 4/4s, I was told that some of the information was inaccurate without help on how or why. I am
uncomfortable publicly posting information that I cannot verify or there I am told there are doubts about, so I removed everything I had on it. With the Aeros and post 2004s, the
models began changing constantly, even weekly, without MMC notes and I could no longer track each with confidence. I believed, at the time, that forums would be best to handle
these models. Of course, many of the 4000+ gomog pages can assist for components that didn't change. Gomog also covers engines and transmissions which MMC and does
not.. It all stops at the last LR/Rover Plus 8 in mid 2004. I archive other information, I merely do not post it. The gomog archives are many multiples the size of gomog.

Morgan stuff is my way of doodling.

However, the Series I is the only trad that the MSCC covers and holds spares for. https://www.morgansportscarclub.com/spares The two sources for information for the model
were (are?) George Proudfoot (UK) and John Merton (Australia) MTWC is quite amazing in this regard.

The archives indicate the Series 1 used a Meadows 4 speed gear box until the Spring of 1938 when HFS switched to a Moss box. There might be some early Handbooks that can

You should have one of two engines. But I believe you have mossbox. If so, I have seen contentment with GL4 fluid. The dip stick hole is the filler hold I believe

IF you have a Moss box, and IF it is the same/similar to the one in the Jaguar XK120 (which started in 1948) then this may be of use:

I just tripped over scans of THE 4/4 MORGAN INSTRUCTION BOOK 46 pages in all average page file size circa 150kb. it may have originally belonged to the owner of FLG 280

Circa 2006 I noted a US based website on which many Morgan owners were invited to post details of their Morgan model and their email addresses. The interweb was perhaps far more innocent back then... I noted all the Series One owners and sent them a mail offering to send a copy of the scans of the instruction booklet... some did reply and were grateful to have it.

I also sent copies of the scans to Machiel Kalf at the Morgan historic register some years back...

On the centre pages there was a fold out Lubrication chart similar to the type Castrol used to print which I will attempt to post a pic of.

If you want the scans just send me a PM... Even if you don`t have a Series One there is some interesting reading of the way the MMC thought of themselves and their customers.
