Hello TMers. Today I adjusted my clutch cable on my 1976 4/4. It has been converted to a 5 speed Type 9 Ford Serria gearbox. The problem was it wouldn't get into gear. It's ok now but my mate has said cables can stretch. So the million dollar question is can a normal cable for a 76 Morgan with a 4 speed gear be ok to order?

Clutch cables are adjustable to take care for production/assembly tolerances and for clutch disc wear but not for stretch. If it is really stretched you should replace it as it will break sooner than later. I think the person who did the gearbox conversion knows best where to source the correct cable (maybe it is also from a Ford Sierra ?).
If I was you, I would remove the existing cable and take it to a Ford parts dealer to check it they have something in stock. Otherwise I would try a gearbox/clutch workshop where they have the facilities to do a taylor made cable with the correct fittings and cable length (according your sample).

Sage advice. If the cable had stretched that much, it is possible that several strands may already have broken. I’ve had it happen on motorbike cables a few times and it will invariably let go when you least want it to.
Problem in visiting Ford, is that nowadays, the first question is “what is your registration number” Feeding that into their computer does not reveal a Ford car of course and sadly, I have found that they don't seem to have people nowadays who are willing to search stock and who are able to recognise parts. Even if you say that it’s from a 1983 Ford Sierra for instance, it seems without a matching reg number, “computer says No!”

Fiddling around and adjusting cables was part of the reason I went over to a hydraulic set up on my 5 speed conversion.

Having said that, cable is Ford part number 74 EB 7K553 HB or Quinton Hazell QCC 1148 from a Ford Capri

Relatively straightforward but an engine out job as the clutch slave cylinder fits around the gearbox shaft.

I've a skeleton bell housing which allows me to set the clutch release bearing to clutch cover clearance accurately

Arwyn, may I ask what type of slave cylinder do you use. Is it a Tilton ?
