Coming back from ooop north yesterday (everything is north of me) and I was just joining the M40 around Coventry. I had been playing chicken with the petrol gauge for a while but figured I would not make it to the next+1 services or stop on the M40 and so stopped at Warwick Southbound.

Cough, Splutter, Splash-n-dash

Petrol+ 98 octane at £1.96 a litre. I know, they need to stay open 24hrs a day etc etc. at 50p a litre over everywhere else I suspect it is inhibiting the profitability!

Put in a minimum and headed down the A34 to the Sainsburys.

On the upside I got an AMG M157 (5.5l V8 biturbo from a few generations ago) to do over 30mpg for 420 miles. I must be getting old(er) as that is a new record for me on that engine and I have had it in four different cars over the years.

Alistair that's great news we must see pictures of your new V8 please. That mpg is impressive - cruise control ?

Glad you made it to the Highway Robbery Centre at Warwick though..before it spluttered.

Enjoy to the Max thumbs woohoo

A fair point Arwyn.

In my experience the petrol gauges on AMG's are a miserable negative bunch who like to keep at least another 5L for themselves. I had the same model/engine a few years back and when it said "on reserve" I often did 80 miles+ (carrying a can the first time to be a good boy) without a glitch.

However this specific car is new (to me, too tight to buy a new new one at those prices) and I have not checked it yet. As mentioned I definitely did not want to do it on the Motorway and so I jumped off at the Warwick Bandit Emporium. I figure I had another 50-60 miles in it and 30 miles to go on the M40 so could have made it to the Sainsburys on the existing petrol but was not willing to risk it. I am aware that there are three services between the 2 junctions I was using but it was about 5 miles to Warwick and then 25 miles to the next two. So instead of playing chicken I got a good plucking.
