As regards Bristol Steven, there is little doubt that the Fighter bankrupted the company. Development costs were huge apparently and not many have been sold - I still fancy one though...
In Rocket Red, of course!! Don't tempt me Alan!

If I recall it was a little more conservative. The owner told me it had been built by a company that had been making aircraft during the war and had switched (part of?) their production to cars after the war. Was it the Bristol 450 Le Mans car Peter? Certainly, the history you quote sounds very much like Bristol?

I still have a dinky toy model of the 450 coupé with rear fins. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DINKY-TOYS-163...=item53e706203b

I didn't realise that you were a longtime Bristol fan Steve?

I didn't realise that you were a longtime Bristol fan Steve? It is more a love/hate relationship. I do not find many of the V8 cars attractive (such as the 412 and Beaufighter), although I like the look of the series 6. When I saw the Fighter at the Festival of Speed I was in love again.

It was a Bristol Type 401 - 2 litre Saloon. https://boc.net/page.php?currPage=cars&sc=3 The article confirms that it was designed on aerodynamic principles with the aid of a wind tunel. Very interesting.

Good Peter, glad we were able to track it down. The engine and much of the running gear was based mainly on the BMW 328 and this was due to their connection with Frazer Nash through HJ Aldington (a Director of BAC). It is therefore kind of neat that Bristol have now been taken over by Frazer Nash. I understand where you are coming from Steve, I don't like the 412 much either. But some of the early cars are really beautiful imho and the Series VI are fantastic, but horrendously expensive! I found this on a model site whilst looking for more photos...

End of an era, or another one bites the dust! The Bristol Factory Clear-out, it appears that the new FN-designed Bristol will be built in Surrey! The fact that a Fighter rear hatch mould appears to be on a pile of rubbish doesn't look good for the future of the present model range!

All rather sad, first car I went in was Dad's Bristol 400 DHC, first job was as Roll-Royce apprentice at Coventry Bristol Engine Division.....
