Can anyone advise me on the correct torque setting for the rear axle castle nut on a 1953 plus 4 ?

The big 7/8 UNF one?

I've usually gone for about 130 ft lb plus a little bit more to get the split pin holes to line up.

Couple of points:

Make sure the key is properly fitted in the keyway - else you will split the hub as you tighten the nut.

Make sure you have a nice fitting split pin

Many thanks, It's this one (which is marked as 32 MRA1060 rear axle shaft nut 7HA) in the spares book

When I undid it, all I could tell was it was tightened to more than the 140 lb-ft limit of my admittedly rather cheap torque wrench.

Is a 7HA axle expected on a 1953 plus 4?

Arwyn raises a good point about split pins. Don't be tempted to use the next size up just because it snuggly fits the hole with nut removed. It will make later removal far more difficult, there should be some slack.

Don't go too smaller diameter though, the head should fill most of the gap between castellations to ensure pin stays in required orientation.

Bear in mind there are metric and imperial sizes.

Be wary of using stainless pins in tight fitting spaces as it may be difficult to bend ends over and worst still when you want to straighten them when removing - I'm thinking of those securing pedal linkage clevis pins here.

If you have to cut pins down to suit make sure one end is left a little longer than the other to ease splitting and bending to secure. Use long nose pliers with serrated ends to grip before bending.

Finally they are correctly called split pins not cotter pins innocent

Imperial split pins are getting a bit hard to find though. All of the assorted split pins sold these days are metric sizes.

A 1953 car should have a 3HA but to be honest things like the hub securing nut are common to both the 3HA and 7HA axles so it's probably the right nut despite the 7HA part number. Interestingly the 3HA and 7HA inner oil seal carries a 3HA part number
