There are many similarities between Morgans and Land Rovers which I guess is why so many people have both. It is also pretty common for Morgan owners to attempt to "improve" their cars by suspension changes for smoother rides, tuning or changing engines, even Jewellery et al. It strikes me that the main difference between "improving" and "changing it It into something it is not" is simply the cost of the process.
As far as this Defender goes, whilst I don't need the extra power I would buy it like a shot if I had that level of disposable income. But I suspect that JLR have missed the boat, there are MANY rivals in this market place - Twisted, Mahker, Retro Defenders, Cool n Vintage, ECR, Helderburg, Blackbridge, JE, King, Squire and no doubt many others I have not stumbled across. But, in general the Defender market place seems to have tanked,
Love them or hate them, be disparaging of the sort of people who buy them, but if they are keeping skilled artisans in work then they get my vote. I would agree if that was not such a broad church you highlight. Some of it encourages the all show no go, all the gear and no idea crowd which drags away from the value it offers. I guess it highlights the good stuff all the more!
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

It could push up the prices of old Defenders as it did with early Range Rovers.

BTW, if anyone has got any clever ideas about how you can squeeze a bed into a 90 Hardtop I'd be very interested! The only way I've seen it having been done on a 90 was a thin 'folding' bed that ran the length of the 90 and went between the seats. Without wishing to state the obvious, this was a single occupancy only option. If I recall correctly, I also saw one where the owner removed the passenger seat and this allowed for a wider bed but the issue was that you couldn't carry a passenger unless they used one of the rear, side mounted, folding seats, which isn't pleasant for long journeys! I know you've vetto'd pop-ups in your reply but Ex-Tec used to offer a pop-up for the 90 that looked seamless when it wasn't in use and to the untrained eye, you'd struggle to know the roof cantilevered up and made for a sleeping space. In my 90 if you tilt the passenger seat back forward it drops level with the half bulkhead so you could run a platform from rear-door to dash, and as wide as the nearside two seats if you wanted as the middle seat has no headrest.

I like the 2016< Defenders but I've always struggled to see the appeal of modifications that try to turn it into something it isn't. Improving the interior, suspension and remapping the 2.4/2.2 diesel engine to improve performance and smooth out the 'kangarooing', I understand. However, all of that can be done for under £10,000 easily AND that would be with great components. Quite. I don't get trying to turn a Landy into something it isn't, but I'm all in favour of working with its base capabilities to make it better at what it is. Once we stopped keeping sheep and llamas we didn't want to get rid of the Landy but did want to make it more usable for 'er indoors to go wild swimming in remoter places, often meaning we need to go further on motorways and suchlike to get there. A Roamerdrive overdrive system, sound proofing and insulation, thick floor mats a decent set of seat covers, and some homemade cupboards in the back to hold cooking and portapotty have completely transformed it for a few thousand quid (mainly the Roamercrive) whilst still meaning we can chuck chainsaw and kit in the back for when we go logging. BTW, if anyone has got any clever ideas about how you can squeeze a bed into a 90 Hardtop I'd be very interested! Fully agree with you both. But clearly there is a market as JLR wouldn't be dong this. I know of someone who is in discussions about getting one and when I asked why this particular build, he echoed what I assumed would be the target market, in that it's a factory car and one he can spec. He is a diehard JLR fan so I sort of get it. As for making the Defender into something that it's not, I might be guilty of that. I have already changed out the full interiors, added carpets, bits from some of the Celebration Series etc. Does it make it drive or work better? Not one bit. However, it is making it unique to me and making it less rough around the edges. Some on the Defender forums might say I've tarted it up, so be it. It makes me smile! Making something your own, unique and what is right for you is what makes being a car enthusiast fun and interesting... If only my lotto numbers would come though!!!

'Er indoors ruled that out immediately, she's convinced she'd fall out. Plus it's a bit obvious if you're doing a bit of stealth camping up a lane in Wales.
