The rear of the car has space behind the panel with the speakers and courtesy lights.
Gonze showed that briefly in his My top 20 CX tweaks post. He also kindly told me more via a PM conversation.
Today with the rain falling & the wind howling I nipped into the garage to have a go.

With the rear shelf cleared you need to pull back the carpet (maybe vacuum it first!).
There are 4 of 3mm allen screws to remove. A long handled ball end key works best.




Then with a thin pallette knife you can lever the 5 plugs out of the wooden frame. I worried about this but not much force was needed and the paint didn't scratch. Despite being removed mine remain tight on replacing them. My car doesn't have an MMC sound system but does seem to have the wiring & the holes for the speakers. A future project maybe.





Unlike the trad access to the hood release mechanism is easy.


I then fixed my wheel spanner, squirty foam & basic tools into the space securing them with 50 mm self ahesive velcro. The usable space is roughly 14 cm wide by 90 cm long and 13 high but wiring etc means you need to fit the items in a smaller space. I kept the first aid kit, reflective jackets & warning triangle in the car.
But this still liberates a lot of space behind the seats.
In the photo below you can also just see that I applied noise absorbing foam to the rear panel. The car can be boomy at times & I'm hoping this will help.




I have kept an allen key & some thin aluminium bar under the carpet so I can access the area when out.

Nice job, John, but it confuses me that I don't see speakers, only courtesy lights.....!?

Ruut there are the cut outs for speakers but the car has no sound system so no speakers. I really need a wiring diagram to fit a system.

Hi John, may a bit ignorable from me, but I really did not know they were delivered without a sound system. I thought basic it was standard. As my dealer in The Netherlands specced a beautiful PlusFour (MY end 2022) with virtual every option, completely to my taste, I was not involved in the speccing proces. I simply bought it from the showroom. It has the optional lockable space compartment in the rear, but that is of very little usable value. I just can put the reflective jackets, user manual, travel permits and collision form in it. There is not much space to put it elsewhere. My 4/4 has a lockable glovebox and doorpockets, so huge in comparison. Clemens has his beautiful MorganPark wooden dash in his PlusFour, but that leaves just even less space in the "glovebox". So I quit understand your modification. Cannot understand why MMC did not make that compartment in the back larger. I know it's a relatively expensive option with very little usable value.
I now see you mentioned that you do not have the sound system, MMC should have the wiring diagram, I see no reason why they should not share it with you. Compliments for your modification and good luck with the sound system as a future project. It is not that important but sometimes it's nice to have and use. In my 4/4 I never had a sound system too, but it was a lot louder inside than the PlusFour....!

Ruut, you can download the 22 price list for the car from th MMC website & it is shown as a £370 extra from MY23 it was standard. I have stuck on with velcro under the glove box a bluetooth speaker. Cost £15 powered from the USB socket & good enough for sat nav directions
