i have an S1 roadster 2004. the engine management light comes on with annoying regularity. it has been like this for some time and i usually just cancel it with the reader. the problem is getting worse so i am making more of an effort in trying to solve the problem. i spoke to Allon Whites when the car was in for it's mot. they are saying the probes could be exchanged but no guarantee that is the problem and at £380 per side its an expensive experiment. Also Ford are no longer supporting the 20 year old ECU so reprogramming is not an option. this can't be an isolated problem but it seems no obvious solution is available Does anyone have any bright ideas?
Can the car operate normally without a bulb in the dashboard light?
any thoughts gratefully received
Paul

Unusual as the S1 Roadster is the least likely to throw a MIL warning, as Peter says we really need the code before you cancel it to help you

If it is the lambda sender then check the gaskets on the exhaust manifold don't leak. Buy decent e5 fuel and add cat cleaner. My s1 didn't like cheap supermarket fuel and gave a sender fault especially on the passenger side

I had similar with my Plus8 that a change to E5 fuel sorted. A second problem occured much later with a lambda sensor fault. Downstream sensor heater circuit. I found the part number code in the Gems manual on Gomog and got a replacement from Rimmer Bros. Being the downstream sensor meant no engine running issues as it was used to check the cat efficiency.

any thoughts gratefully received Ask BertR, I've seen him resetting that warning, had to do with fuel fumes. So he just reads out his OBD, and clears the message. occurs couple of times a year!

The code is PO171 Too Lean Bank1.
It is always the same and sometimes it throws up a code for Bank 2.
i appreciate any comments to help track down a solution.

Hello Rev4K, we had exactly the same problems when those Roadster Series 1 came onto the market. MIL very often on and mostly P0171 and P0174 have been the faults. We could nearly cure all our customer cars from their suffer by doing this: Taking off the Morgan self made air box. In front of the air flow meter Morgan did glue in a kind of wire mesh or better an expanded metal mesh. This shall protect the air flow meter for bad air streaming. We simply did fit a second expanded metal mesh and glued it in. This did improve how the air flows around the air mass meter. Very simple and over here very successful Regards Frank
