I have realised in the few weeks of being on this site, that there are an enormous number of bright and knowledgable blokes on here. To be PC I’m sure that applies to the wives & women also .
So I feel such a plank .Complete numb nuts . My brain has gone to mush in the three weeks of having a new knee and watching endless daytime TV. Property porn and loose women in abundance.

My wife came in tonight and said she was having difficulty with the Volvo XC60 keys and had bought replacement batteries .As she has nursed me so well I immediately responded to her request & replaced the batteries in the key fobs .
Minutes later Duh ! It dawned on me that the fobs do everything and sure enough they don’t work. They need programming !

Does anyone know how to do this with newish Volvos ? Any little hack? The nearest Volvo dealer is miles away . Hopefully tomorrow I can get in with the third master key , turn off the alarm an reprogram.

Any advice, spot on Youtube videos, would be gratefully received.
I don’t believe I did this …….MM
PS Also so dumb I cannot send pictures to the site and the posts on computer problems sound like a foreign language to me.

Are you sure you inserted the batteries correctly?

This Link points to a Volvo site with instructions for key battery changing; It makes no reference to re-programming. It may not be the correct model of XC60 of course.

You are right, it doesn’t mention re programming although some sites seem to imply it needs to be.
Replacing the batteries was really very easy and in truth could not be done wrongly . I can phone the dealership in the morning but really hope I can sort from inside the car . Thanks for the link though, Michael

Hi Mike, I have a 2018 XC60 and checking through the handbook, as Paul says above, there is no mention of reprogramming the remote key just changing the batteries. There is reference to having a new remote key programmed to the car at a dealer, the car can apparently support 12 individual keys! If the batteries are correct and in the right way and if you have your car serviced at a Volvo Authorised service centre then you should have Volvo Assistance cover, could be worth a call. Tel: 0800 777 116.
Good luck

I have a 2014 XC60 and after changing the batteries in the key fob (that the car told me to do) it takes a few goes to lock and unlock , not very confidence inspiring -it feels like the car -which I like is having me on . slap

I have recently replaced the batteries in both keys of my 2021 XC40, with no problems.
Note: if you have a “Key Tag” which enables button-less entry, the batteries in those cannot be replaced and a dealer has to supply and program a new one.

I had the same problem, make sure the batteries are making a good connection. I had to put a slip of thin card on top of one battery to ensure it pressed firmly on the contacts. There is no need to reprogramme the keys when replacing the batteries. Also make sure the surface of the battery is clean, some come with a thin film on the surface.
Some on the Volvo forum have reported that some makes of battery don't work as well as others.

Thanks for all the info and suggestions and yes it is Keyless entry.
I contacted Volvo assist number you supplied and they talked me through some things BUT the only key slot is on the passenger door (lift and it’s under the handle) and sure as eggs are eggs in the 4 years we have had it , it had ‘seized’ and would not open! Even our petrolhead neighbour tried and failed.
We sit, thankfully at home waiting Rachel Thieves at the despatch box and a Volvo technician to arrive - a knight in shining armour to rescue us……….

Just as an aside I have been reading about peoples Morgan battery issues - gosh that seems like a real faff. When did life get so complex . The Victorians built stuff that lasts, hospitals, steam engines, sewers…..now you have to routinely manage your new kitchen and stone surfaces with special cleaners. Service your boiler annually - the last gas one went for 34 years without a service,, this one has an outdoor condensing pipe from the cellar that frozen up when cold. Just when we needed the heat.
I could be Grumpy Pa if it hadn’t been used already ! I get grumpier by the week and todays budget will make me worse.

Anyway much appreciated your comments and assistance . MM

Its a bit late to help you as I see the A team are on the way... I have changed the batteries several times in our fobs for our keyless entry XC90, they seem to last about 2 years of hard use.. they have never needed a re program after battery changes. I thought but cant be sure that the main dealer should change these in one of the service intervals?, at least the fob that comes in with the car?? May be worth checking.. We now use an independant Volvo dealer to service our car as the local main dealer was not good.. hence why I change the batteries myself. I also change the battery in the spare fob ( although not at the same time ) so I know the battery levels are good.
Good luck MM I hope all goes well for you..

Help came before Rachel Thieves had finished punishing us .
The day began badly. I had a letter from an expensive London retirement village offering me a a M&S voucher if I visited their home, with bistro, gym and swimming pool…. with a view to buy a £1 mill flatlet Then I opened another letter from Wiltshire Farm Foods! Feeling ancient I bio oiled my new knee and met up with Volvo assist.

I discovered my Volvo does have a dipstick, unfortunately it was me . He took out the batteries from the fobs as he said people often pushed in the prong connections causing them not to work. Happy with that he popped in a new Panasonic battery and the car came back to life. Then he noticed that whilst I had removed a battery sized Repulsive taste card printed in several languages the underside of the battery had a 4 or 5mm Bitrex sticker . Having removed the incredibly well packed batteries and not touched them with my fingers, I had not seen this extra Health & Safety measure !

I apologised to the guy, grovelling for forgiveness but he was a gent and said don’t worry,
I feel you guys deserve to know of my incompetence and to buy Panasonic 2032 batteries to save any embarrassment .
MM
