I know that if I buy certain new cars, they suffer 'first year' VED at premium rates. And this is only going to increase after Rachel's Budget.
My question is, does anybody know if I buy a car that is, say, 8 months old and tax it....
Will I be clobbered with 12 months tax at the full rate? Or a blended rate of 4 months at the first-year rate, and 8 months at the subsequent rate?
Cheers, Colin

Blended. Or at least that is what happened to me with a 2019 Merc that cost the first owner more than 40k. Latest demand has just landed and has the remaining 3 months of my 5 years at £630pa and then it goes to 9 months at £200 pa
That extra VED runs for for 5 years.

Howard, thanks. That's helpful.
But, yes, if the car lists at >£40k you're in for the additional £410 pa for five years, as you say.
Cheers, Colin

What an outstandingly complex duty in the second owner scenarios. Pleased the six punitive years are now passed on Morton. Meanwhile the VED on our diesel Mini remains at £35/year.

I found a similar question posed on the ftypeforum, whether right or wrong of course is down to the responder, as with all forums…
The answer was that the first year rate is paid when the car is purchased new and is virtually part of the purchase price. So if the car is sold during that first year, that first year tax is NOT refundable. The new second owner then starts off taxed at the rate the car would be in subsequent years. As already discussed, the luxury 40k+ rate will apply for a full 5 years from date of original registration on top of the normal road tax. So in short, if you buy a used car less than one year old, that first year tax hit is only paid once in the lifetime of the car and has already been suffered by the first owner, who is the only loser.

I've just had my tax reminder for the Kia. £710!!! Never mind, I'm sure there will be a lot of potholes fixed for that.

As already discussed, the luxury 40k+ rate will apply for a full 5 years from date of original registration on top of the normal road tax. If only Doug. It's actually six years after first registration. The five years start after the first year

Well I hope it's a good ride then. It's a workhorse, Rich, I use it for carrying stuff for the Men's Shed and it's got a crane so that I can hoist the electric scooter into it if I'm going somewhere with steep or long hills insead of walking. Reasonably economical on diesel as well.

Still getting your beauty of an Aston out and about ?
