Years ago I got into a bit of trouble on another forum for saying "We own Morgans because we love them, not because they are actually any good".

Apologies to those who have been on this forum for a while, and who have read of me rambling on and on...

As I have often typed, I came to Morgan custodianship following a decade or so of air-cooled Porsche ownership and thus well used to the kind of reliability that quality engineering that Porsche turned out, all prior to thinking a Morgan might just fit the bill as a substitute for a true vintage vehicle. My thinking was that a Morgan could provide pseudo vintage driving pleasures while also able to keep up with Y2K traffic and at a far less cost than a true vintage machine with similar levels of performance... Prior to purchase I took to the interweb, and learned of both the joys and possible foibles related to Morgan ownership....Forum members seemed only too happy to go out of their way to guide me towards Morgan ownership. All that was back in the mid 90`s and it took till circa 2002 before I purchased my mid 80`s professionally restored +8, which fortunately I still own today.. (-:

It does seem a pity that those who may not have spent time carrying out ..err..due diligence, in terms of buying a new Morgan over the last decade or more, may have higher expectations than Morganeers of old, who were either of the hands on dirty fingernail brigade, or were not perturbed by having their garage of choice fettle out whichever foible might require attention from time to time...?

For sure much changes in the passage of time, and legislation has caused modern Morgans and all other ice propelled machines to become ever more complex, thus potentially creating room for a few more foibles to creep in..? I suspect there will be those Morgan owners who are still comfortable to get in amongst their Morgans to both resolve mechanical and digital issues, the digital made all the more simple via the ability to connect a reader to the ECU, and reading fault codes etc. etc. to assist in their own repair processes, or just to avoid having to hand it into a garage with no idea of the likely issue/costs involved...?

I find myself in a similar position re modern machinery as it seems things may have turned full circle for me, in that I would now more trust my mid eighties Morgan to be reliable today, than my 2012 Porsche with similar mileage on the clock...! My Morgan also certainly far less expensive to maintain, all be it I still blow the dust off my tools to change the oil and carry out the sort of rudimentary tasks an old Mog might be in need of to keep it up to scratch.. With the Porsche I would not venture out in it without breakdown insurance, and a cell phone, such is my inability to deal with the issues it can throw up, even though it is fully maintained by my local Porsche dealership and I pay them to insure it against manufacturing defects, which it seems Porsche, like so many other manufacturers have to deal with on modern digitally monitored and controlled ice propelled machines...

All that typed. I am reluctant to type that as yet it has not broken down, though has had to have a couple of issues resolved, fortunately covered under the extended warranty, which caused me a degree of inconvenience and mild concern at the time...hmm..? It seems technological advance can for an old selective Luddite like me, seem like a bit of a backward step on occasion..

Just thought to add that some buyers of new Porsches with centre lock wheels have been informed that their new cars may be unsafe to drive until inspected by a Porsche technician, the resolution if the centrelocks are found to be defective, is seemingly not readily available.... !
