Thankfully not (I hope)

My information is that R-M likes his Bentleys; owning both a T model and a Derby Bentley.

Nice cars, but (imho) a dreadful human being. :toff

I like this thread, it's funny. Everything I miss from UK TV these days.

Thank goodness there is room in this world for the eccentricities of the RM, whilst I don't always agree with his political stance, he is very knowledgeable in many areas and from time to time makes insightful comments.

Yes, he come across as a bit of a toff from a privileged background, that type of diversity in our political landscape, tends to keep us more honest and open to a wider spectrum overall, than much of the narrow predictable mainstream politicians. I would like to think there is room for differing views at both ends of the debate, it would be a sad grey world if the RM were not allowed to exist.

I do get the impression that RM presents the real RM at all times. He's certainly quirky, but his background probably didn't leave any wiggle room. I think what you see is what you get.

I've been mulling over the Starmer thing for a while. Despite his background he sees no problem with lying. The internet is full of it and I think my favourite is the pledge to remove tuition fees. A blatant punt to get the student vote. Now they see fees increasing. Starmer is blind to the political optics. Thinking that it's OK to take freebies because it's within the rules says it all. Reeves and Rayner are just the same, and probably the whole cabinet.

Then I think about Corbyn. Seriously divisive figure, living in the seventies, and yet like RM, Corbyn was totally predictable, and maybe because of that, more honest. Until we get accountability in politics and sanctions for dishonesty, nothing will change.

I'm wavering between 'none of the above', and 'least worst'.............................

Would love to have eavesdropped a conversation between Dennis Skinner (AKA the beast of Bolsover) and RM.

As an aside, Ken Clarke's autobiography is a fascinating read for folks of a certain age - it goes into some detail about how he saw a decline in standards in his last years in the house.

The rot set in with Sir Alex Douglas-Home .... solid PM who was respected and effective in negotiating the Cuban Missile Crisis and getting the Conservatives from wipe-out to only losing to Wilson's labour by 4 seats in less than a year .... not good on the TV and his 'chinless-wonder' looks fed the media .... since then 'looking good for the lens' has become essential and 'solid, honest and competent' has slipped down the requirements of the politician's job-description.

Hence we have 'rule by used-car salesman'. ! *

Yes I always liked Ken and his book was thoughtfully penned and full of insights of the time.

The PM we should have had instead of Doris et al..

K - intrigued to know "who looks good on tv" ?

Rich .... 'good' doesn't have to mean beautiful! 🙂 ... but you need to come across well (whether you have something cogent to say or not doesn't matter) and be of a type rather than (how can I put this charitably 🙂) 'individual' or 'eccentric' .... slippery plausability and mainstream does it these days. Someone rounded off with as little as possible in the way of edges the media can catch their claws on! 🙂
