I tend to agree with you. Whilst Musk is upfront with his political position, you know where you stand with him. I prefer that to the more insidious infiltration and undermining and lobbying of eg Cop28 by the big oil companies and oil producing nations who are protecting their income streams at the expense of the planet, whilst hiding behind a façade of greening and cleaning the environment credentials. Knowing all of this we still continue to buy oil based products and put petrol in our tanks despite the known environmental damage we are causing.

This could become a world record for thread drift, so I will reply in the Soap box.

Have you thought about an R5?
Renault has quite a lot of expertese in electric cars and the predesessor (Zoe) is a good car.
I would not go for an ICE for a keeper...
Donˋt worry about battery life as modular replacement is common by now...

What does this mean? Who offers this and at what level of cost?

It might have drifted when someone mentioned earlier they would never buy anything connected to Elon Musk.... being Trump's puppet master or something and drug taking. Oh! It was you. smile

We at Audi do so - and I am pretty sure that we are not alone...

I do develop the new ones - so not so familiar with service prices.
Heard something about thousand Euros for one module.

I was offered a battery 'swop out' upgrade for my i3 by BMW for the latest spec of higher kWh and range, can't remember exact cost (but was in the £1000's) so not viable at the time for me

Lithium battery costs are now down to $115/KWh, and there's good reason to expect them to drop further. But even if they don't, a replacement cost of around $4k for a 40KWh battery seems feasible, especially compared to the replacement cost of an ICE engine

The biggest issue I would think is not one of cost but of compatibility as the tech changes. Early Nissan Leaf batteries for example, didn't have heat sinks in them which is why they degrade comparatively quickly compared to current stuff, and even then they are outlasting original estimates by quite some margin.

Our Mini battery is just over 3 years old. No measurable degradation in range, no sign of any problems. I see no reason to think it will not be still providing useful capacity way beyond its 7 year guarantee period. Even if it degrades to 80% capacity it will still be fine for what we use it for.

At least the Lithium mountain disgarded once Hydrogen comes on stream will be of use to the NHS as mental disorders seem to be on a logarithmic trajectory at present.
