I recently watched a video that Henry Catchpole did on RUF Automotive and specifically the SCR. At one stage in the video, he poses the question as to whether the car in question could answer the eternal petrolhead question, "is there such a car that negates the need for other cars and does all that any enthusiast really wants and needs; in other words: one and done."

If we are playing this theoretical game, the one vehicle rules really need to apply: enjoyable to a degree that a some who loves driving won't get bored and practical enough to be used daily (and, I assume in a perfect world, have four seats for those occasional requirements to carry more than driver and one passenger!). We can avoid the 'what if I need to move furniture' debate because renting a van is cheap and easy for those rare occasions. If you carry three adults regularly, then that needs to be considered and probably rules out 2+2 type sports cars, with their tiny occasional seats in the rear.

So, over to you chaps... what would your One & Done be? Is there automotive nirvana or is it a fallacy and the reason why people justify owning more than one vehicle?

Without doubt I'd get a well sorted Reliant Scimitar GTE SE5a great cruiser and handling fun and enough go with the Essex V6 in front driving the rear axle. We both enjoyed our time touring and commuting in our Wessex green one when it was our only car in the mid late 70's.

We are easily pleased.

Oh this is potentially going to be a great Thread. How about a Gordon-Keeble? Beautiful inside and out, blisteringly fast, four seater and with a few appropriate upgrades ride and handle well. I will raise The eternal car enthusiast lament "I wish I had bought one when they were affordable".

Maybe, for the one-and done car, with all the practical issues, a Porsche 911 comes to mind......! hide

There are loads of possibilities that I could be very happy with. Scimitar, MGB GT, Jag XJ6, Classic Mini, Morris Traveller, VW Type 2.

But for me, where I live and with my lifestyle, there's only one choice: Land Rover Defender 110. I bloody love Landies.

For cars I have owned it would be a 3.0 E Capri Mk 1, but the one I always wanted was a Lotus Carlton. A real wolf in sheep clothing, 4 seats, big boot and very quick - perfect!

The Memsahib and I have often pondered this question. Having had all sorts of weird and wonderful cars over the last 50 years or so, we keep coming up with the same answer - 1.6 Peugot 205 GTi.
Great fun car, 4 seats when needed, hatchback so plenty of luggage space for the 2 of us and it went like stink. Even had a ruddy great glass panel sliding sunoof if I remember correctly. My brother had the 1.9 version at the same time but it was nowhere near as nice to drive.

Got to be my old Defender for me .... joined at the hip! 🙂

Though back when I didn't live in the middle of a forest my Scimitar GTE was pretty close to the 'universal motor' .... great tourer, fun on the a-roads and you can move house in it.
