The majority of articles seem to state the opposite: either stating the ‘V6 is slightly lighter’, or in some cases “crucially it's far smaller and lighter than the V8” (source of quote)

As Porsche were involved with the engineering development of the V6 and it is a more modern engine, I would be surprised if it was heavier than then Rover V8. I’ve had the pleasure of helping to pull one of those out of a vehicle and it certainly hadn’t been on a January diet grin2

Sorry, I have reproduced it incorrectly. Unfortunately, I now have not found any more precise figures than on these two pages below. According to them, the Ford Duratec 3.0 “fully dressed” (whatever that means) weighs 360 pounds and the Rover V8 between 317 and 375 pounds (“dry weight”) during its lifetime, although I don't know whether with or without add-on parts such as the alternator etc.. I could not find out what the weight of both engines is in real life. But I would agree with you, Simon, that the Ford is lighter after all.

I was always a bit sceptical about the claims that the heavier V8 made the Roadster a lighter car to drive, and a good few years ago, also tried to find out what the difference in weight was. Like Heinz I could not find an exact weight. In the end I came to the conclusion that, in the grand scheme of things, it would take an F1 driver to notice any difference on the front end.

The V6 is quite a way further back in the chassis. I doubt the weight difference is much, but I expect the Roadster will be a bit lighter over the front.axle.

Spot on, imho, and could be said for many similar developments of cars. At the risk of thread drift, in my younger years I used to convince myself that the small incremental gains that manufacturers made, as they evolved (marketed) individual model lines, made a big difference to the way the car drove. Now I look back and think that the wiser money would have been spent on driver tuition rather than upgrading to the latest model.

^^ What he said! 🙂

Undoubtedly the best-spent money in terms of time/pound when I was racing was the money I spent on 'seat-time' .... £500 spent on carbon whatnots might get you a 1/10 sec .... £500 with the steering wheel in your hands on track will get you seconds.

Only when you don't have a 1/10 left in you will the fancy alloy thingie or 4 grands worth of shocks be worth putting on your Christmas list. 🙂

Anyway interesting that they say the Roadster engine was lighter than the Rover V8 and that it’s mounted slightly further back giving a better balance to the car

Not sure that’s entirely right but I will do a bit of research to find out

IIRC, that was what was stated in the MMC's marketing blurb when the Roadster was launched, I have an original brochure somewhere (the orange fold out thing ?) but it's gone awol since we moved

No further bids, still below reserve at £18K. Ends tomorrow.

Not for me, but it might yet be a bargain for someone willing to take the risk.

Update: Now at £20,000 and reserve met.
