Looking more closely at the wiring diagram it seems the optional front fog light wiring relies on a trigger from the headlight switch (before dipswitch) to the BCU (blue cable) to allow fog lights on if their switch is energised. I assume the spots would only need to be on with main beam, so if the blue command cable were transferred from headlight switch to main beam feed (splice into warning light feed) this would be achieved. A factory switch would need to be added of course to existing dash wiring but no extra relays, wiring or fuses would then be required as its all factory present and pre-wired, with a relay within the BCU to handle switching.

ETA: Having said this I expect your engineer will work with the PO's installation Chris and just add a relay and feed, but above may be of interest to others starting from scratch and offering a more elegant solution.

All sorted. The problem was exactly as suspected - the spotlights had been wired directly in with the main beam and therefor protected only by the 15amp fuse 13. My mistake - I thought it was 10 amp.

The engineer installed a new spotlight feed from the 40amp fuse via a diode relay.

Moral of the story is perhaps not to assume any aftermarket electrical accessories have been correctly installed - even when the car is bought from a main dealer.

Following on from above...................
My MOG has decided to not work with Main beam on, just my side lights. When i fitted my spotlights, i wired them so that the spots come on at the same time as i put on Main beam and vice versa. In the past this has been a separate rocker switch (the spotlights) but travelling at night i found a pain to go from Main beam and also use the rocker switch at the same time, so not blinding the oncoming driver.
Have i done wrong? it seemed like good idea to me at the time. As i write this i haven't checked the fuse box!

Did you fit relays? If not, there's a chance you've burnt out the column switch contacts (I did the same when I fitted Halogen bulbs).

Check the fuses and if all OK, then it's likely to be the column switch. Replacements are available (at a cost) but it you're OK with wiring you can fit much cheaper ones from other vehicles. I have an Austin Mini one on mine.

Yes i'm 99% sure i put in relays. My column switch is from a Austin Mini. I will check the relay at the next chance.

Is it just main beam that's missing, or have you lost dip beam as well?

If both are gone, as side lights are working (direct power from dash switch), there may also be a connection issue in the feed between dash switch and column switch

At work, and the boss not in, so time for a quick reply. The issue is only on full beam. Everything else works, horn and indicators working fine. .
