Hi,

I am contemplating removing the Cobra brake light and thought before I start I'd ask for any thoughts/comments from the collective in case i have missed anything obvious, so thanks in advance.

I have a luggage rack that rarely comes off, so I intend to replace the light with an LED one clipped to the top bar of the luggage rack.

The main reason for the change is so the the side screens (in their case) can slide in/out of the slot in the rack from above without having to remove a case from the rack. It would also help when the spare is required, getting the 16" Stainless wheel off requires dropping it down before lifting off which is heavy and awkward especially with the rack in the way and my back always complains.

So there you go, I guess my main concern would be if it's legal.

Thanks

Mark

Perhaps I'm one of the few that like the Cobra (I added a chrome bezel though), so I have deleted the suitcase ! smile

The Cobra / high level brake light is considered to be an accessory and not a legal requirement except in the USA where it is a legal requirement on all new vehicles.

It's not that I don't like them, I have the same chrome bezel so it matches the other rear lights, it just gets in the way and the paint on mine is bubbling and it keeps coming loose.

Another one that loves the Cobra especially over the tacky LED strips used on the CX series, accepting the Cobra was revived for later Plus Fours when spare wheel spec'd.

BTW the factory luggage rack on my Roadster provides side access for the bagged side screen slot. A folding arm lowers to give access then pivots back with thumbscrew lock to hold screens secure.

I often use a Tonneau cover and wondered if the CX covers have a clear section so the brake light is visible.

Well I didn't know about this rack, the one I have was supplied by the dealer as a freebie when I bought it. frown

The Cobra does what it says on the tin, had it on both Plus 8's but the 4/4 Sport had the little letterbox LED - very neat but not as effective imho.

My good lady is not partial to topless touring so never had bags on the back but Dave W has a good solution with a portable LED bar on here somewhere.

In Belgium, the third brake light is mandatory on all new cars since 2003.
Two-tone, our 4/4 is from 1990, I drove it for almost 30 years without a third brake light without any problem.
MattMog is from 2014, so with Cobra.
I didn't like the cobra on a Morgan. So I took it off.
With a suitcase you can't see it any way.

To avoid problems abroad, I use this.

But for the annual inspection "MoT" it has to be put back on.
However, it doesn't have to be the cobra. The travel version is also good and saves a lot of work.

Neither is mine, especially if the hood is down innocent
