Glad you enjoyed your fix of heavy metal Dave, they are so imposing, I love them and they make our Trads seem very sophisticated
I know Brian's (Aeroman) brother is an ex tankie.. His name came up when we were discussing
the Meteor power units. Oh dear just spotted the tank driving experiences !!!

Good reason not to buy a Porsche? He was involved with using slave labour to build the tank.

My late next door neighbour was an interesting chap by the name of Karl-Heinz Decker. An ex SS man (12th SS Hitler Youth Panzer Regiment), he was tank crew, holding the rank of Sturmann (equivalent to a Lance Corporal, I think!) He had a soft spot for the King Tiger and it's ultra reliable Maybach engine. Apparently shooting the turrets off Sherman tanks was his forte He was captured at Falaise by the Canadians who made him dig his own grave before an officer stopped them from killing him. Came to Wales as a PoW and did not fancy returning, ended up marrying a local girl and working as a postman. Completely unrepentant to the last... Arwyn

Arwyn, What an interesting story was he mechanically inclined or just a sighter or whatever they are called. Not many folk will have met one of they.

He was the gunner apparently. But was expected to help keep the tank running.

That's quite an ask, thanks.

I may have related this story before thus will cut it short this time... My old pal, was on the opposite side from your neighbour Arwyn, and was the driver of a Sherman which took a hit while crossing a bridge over a river, he had taken the precaution of opening the hatch above his head, and reckons he was blown clear like a cork out of a bottle, the only survivor from his crew, lay on the river bank for days till the Yanks found him. He had a silver pin put in his badly scarred lower leg to repair his broken bone.... He worked as a slater and plasterer till he retired at 65..That generation had to face so very much..
