In my early 20s I was the assistant to the engineer in the Concrete and Soils Laboratory of the NSW Railway. This Laboratory tested samples from all concrete pours, and made geological evaluations, including subsoil and rock cores from diamond drilling. Part of my job involved technical drawings and design for testing equipment. One such machine involved placing a core sample under pressure in a pressurised container and then testing the perpendicular load it could bear. Naturally the core samples had to be isolated from the fluid used for the surrounding pressure.

I was told a story, maybe by a biology teacher, of a lab assistant being sent out to by two dozen condoms for use in connecting some bits of equipment.

Pharmacist:"Do you want plain or tipped?"
Lab guy:"It doesn't matter, we cut the ends off"
