I haven't done a search, but I am guessing that no-one has looked seriously at fitting a tow bar to a Plus Four?

Whilst I appreciate the dire warnings from the factory and I am sure well meaning souls will warn against voiding insurance and making the car illegal, I still can't help wondering if fitting a towbar is even doable, let's say as an exercise?

I would say yes - you can fit a tow bar. I've stuck them on loads of different stuff in the past, either by welding up brackets, attaching to bumper mounts, or bolted through boot floors or chassis rails etc. There will be something towards the rear that you could make work.

Legally, as you've said, not a chance. Post 1998 (I think) cars have to have a factory spec/homologated tow bar.

It's dead easy to do on a trad, I think Witter even made a kit for it back in the day. One morganeer got Kevin Vernon to fit one to his +8 to tow a custom trailer made from the back half of a Morgan.

On a CX platform I can imagine it would be possible, given enough expenditure, but it could never be a question of simply buying a towbar kit from a company like Witter. I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up having to completely re-engineer the rear chassis and then resubmit for SVA.

Legally and insurance wise it would of course be completely out of the question these days. If you want to tow with a Morgan you'd be much better off buying something from 1998 or earlier when it would be not only legal to fit one but also a great deal easier to do.

From a dull memory I remember that trailer, I think it was perhaps used on a European Adventure, the suggestion being it was partly required to carry more wine back to Ireland from France... (-:
Kevin also made some custom matching cases for Morgans. I am fortunate to own one such..

Yep, he brought it on our trip to Laon for the Classic weekend. Beautifully made but enormously heavy, goodness only know what it did to fuel consumption.

I've got towbars on my 1971 4/4 and 1968 Plus 4.

Morgan factory actually listed them as an optional extra back in the day.

Use mine to pull a small camping trailer or a double motorcycle trailer with ease!

Also used one to pull a tree stump out using the Plus 4's torque!

You don’t need to tow - just have one of these.
