Seeing the gross unreliability of the fuel reserve indicator in the 3W, and getting tired of guessing at my range by estimated fuel consumption and odometry, I am considering installing a "real" fuel gauge in my machine.
I would like to query the fellow three-wheeler maniacs if anyone knows about this conversion, or has done it.
Thank you very much,
Tom

There are threads in the archive about fitting a longer sender to the tank, but it doesn’t help that much. I did it, then the longer sender failed, so I put the factory one back. Consensus is to reset your trip mileage when you fill up, and to refill at 200 - 250 miles. Works well for me.

Long thread here starting with my improvements which still left gauge less than perfect. Start with the longer sender.

M3Wservices offer an analogue fuel gauge that is 100% accurate....

The gauge can be made less random. If you remove the sender unit from the tank, take the aluminium cover off the float and carefully clean the two thin wires with some metal polish, reassemble and refit. That should improve things for a year or two before the wires need cleaning again.

I tried the resistor that was suggested by Richard but it didn't seem to make much difference. I don't think I would drive down to 0% indication and believe what is shown but it does give a reasonable indication of fuel level, I still reset the trip meter every refuel stop. The 280mm sender is a must or the tank show empty with almost half a tank of fuel left.

As a matter of interest, what sort of range could someone expect with normal driving?

I ran out once at 305 miles (according to trip).

An EU owner once said he got to 420 km before he decided he was better off getting some fuel and then put 35 Litres in the tank.

Planenut et al.: I am considering consulting with an aviation company that specializes in precision fuel measurement via conventional analog instruments. I would like to work with them by sending them the original float from my machine, and having them replicate it in order to provide the correct output for a vintage fuel level gauge that will mate well with the Morgan.
I will report my findings.

This might work for a very reasonable cost

I've had a few gizmos from Spiyda, like his tacho conversions & voltage stabilisers and been really impressed
