After some help please. I need to bleed my clutch but struggled today to find the location of the bleed valve, can anyone give me some directions? Is it the slave cylinder I am looking for?

I am working from memory of nearly 20 years ago but will try to help. On my 1993 Plus 8 the slave cylinder you need to bleed is on top of the bell housing near the bulkhead, hidden under fuel injection gubbins (technical term). I used an Eezibleed to make this a one-man job. The bleed valve is located next to the pipe carrying fluid from the master cylinder. My experience was that this slave was a short lived item, and was best replaced with a stainless sleeved replacement.
My 2002 Plus 8 had the slave placed nearer the ground, but was never changed in 12 years of ownership. I had grown to dislike lying on concrete, so local dealer changed fluid every two years as per brakes.
So your slave may be (1995) in either location according to Gomog (highly recommended site).
Do let us know how you get on.

I think premature of the slave situated on top of the gearbox, was perhaps put down to the angle of the pushrod to the lever, supposedly putting a degree of angular thrust on one side of the seals, though don`t know for sure..GoMoG has done a lot of research for sure..

You will find the slave on top at the front of the gear box, it is just inside the gap in the fire wall behind the engine. The best way to locate it is to follow the pipe from the master up, it is fiddly to reach and the bleed nipple is facing you from the peddle side. Hope that makes sense?

Last time I did the job, I modified a 7/16 AF spanner so as to be able to reach the bleed nipple.

If I remember rightly the spanner needed bending in two places!

Thanks for all the replies.

With the help of gomog I have established it’s the Beck variant, and frustratingly for me I can’t get under the car safely otherwise I would do it myself so my local ‘day to day’ mechanic is going to pop it over his pit and give it a bleed, but if it’s anything more than that I’ll have a chat with my regular Morgan specialist.

Another question, I’ve heard about stainless steel slave cylinders but I can’t find them. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

t think the reference to stainless cylinders is in relation to the original worn aluminium cylinders worn bore perhaps being sleeved in stainless by an engineering company...? Sorry don`t know who or whare but no doubt someone will come along soon, or Melvyn Rutter might have such in stock if required..?

Gavin, Try classic car brakes they sleeve master and slave cylinders in stainless and to the original sizing for standard repair kits to be used although it will probably be a long time before you need to use it as they don't wear in the same way in the stainless. Race cars and performance cars requiring constant hard use and higher pressures are often lined as standard so it's not really a repair option rather an upgrade!

Classicar Automotive in Cheshire or Contract Auto Engineering in Stourport do stainless sleeving.

Not only do the sleeving but pressure test afterwards.
