Finally got M3W Brooklands #6 into the TIG welder for the repair of the broken pipe to can weld. I had mentioned in a previous post that NOTHING had been done by the prior owner. I was incorrect…it did have the “recall” brackets installed. My welder said the original welds were MIG not TIG welds and that is most likely why the weld broke because MIG welds are temperature sensitive. I am inclined to believe him considering all I’ve read on this forum about the more lame aspects of Morgans engineering and production techniques. Current temps here in the California desert (over 110 F) prevent me from hitting the road much at the moment to see if this fixes the problem.

I’m no welding expert but does my welders opinion on the original welds sound correct? He’s the only option I have where I reside.

Hi Will, welcome to the forum and congratulations on your purchase. I can't comment on exhaust welding, but was wondering where you are in CA? I live in Vegas, and did track down two other M3W owners there, but neither was interested in meeting up. Are you anywhere near? I've driven my M3W up and down I15 a few times as we spend the summers in Orange County avoiding the heat.

Unfortunately, all experience up to now tells us that repaired Brooklands exhausts only last a few hundred miles (at best) before cracking again. The only long term solution appears to be replacement with properly engineered and assembled units. I hope I'm wrong in your case, but I fear you should be prepared for an ongoing saga!

Well Bunny my man here we are and you're very correct in that statement!

I got 2100 miles and then developed a couple of pinholes. I can probably get another 3-4K out of the original exhaust before I have to replace the muffler cans. I love driving here and I want to try to maintain the original look as much as possible. I guess I'm going to have to find a custom fabricator who can fab the boxes up. I live in the desert southwest US within driving distance to Los Angeles and Orange County. Even Las Vegas is a reasonable distance as fas as towing goes.

Any advice once again is very welcome. You have all been just STAND UP!

Will, I went to Hytech Exhaust in Irvine (Phone: 949-581-2181) to fix mine. They did an amazing job! About a year after they fixed them, a crack developed at a location different from where they were working on. Need to decide what to do as well. I may just have them fix it as well and consider it a cost of having these.

Well I think I may have lucked out. My TIG welder gave me the name of a fellow with a shop nearby in Desert Hot Springs called K-Powered. They are an auto repair shop that can either build exact replacements (with improvements) or weld in very similar profile mufflers that would be missing the slant of the original design.

I’m good for a bit…how long THAT IS THE QUESTION…so I’ll stay in the 200 mile limit from home on my triple A towing until this fellow can fit me in.

I’m going to start a separate post to follow that process. I am leaning heavily in the direction of complete full replica’s with improvements. I don’t want to lose the flavor of the original in spite of the cost.

Quick update on the #6 Brooklands I have been posting about regarding the exhaust cracking. I got through the good driving season (winter in the desert), putting about 2500 miles on it. I never heard from the person I was referred to regarding a proper fix on the ongoing minor cracks in the welds. Called back and I guess I am fully ghosted.

So instead I just ordered the Stage 1 exhaust from garage 56 and I’ll put that on my summer work list for it. Yes it will change the nice back fin look on it which was a fully NOT engineered “feature” of the Brooklands Edition. I’ll keep it all so any future owner can do as he wishes, but I’m more interested in staying on the road and not fighting cracking cans!

I’ll post before and after photos after I perform the switch!

That sounds like a pragmatic solution. I think I remember that Garage 56 can supply their exhausts with the fishtails to special order?

Well I have to say the Garage 56 Stage 1 exhaust is a wonderful thing. Got the old mess removed and installed the new one after DHL held me ransom on 10% for Trump.

Even with that stupidity, I am loving the result. Engine runs noticeably BETTER and she sounds great, no pops on decel. I’m not caring much about losing the fishtail ends on the pipes, but I’ll probably remove them from the old exhaust before I send those bits to salvage just in case I change my mind. The chaps at Garage 56 shipped them well cushioned in 10 inch X 6 foot cardboard tubes. Had them 6 days after order was placed.
