What do you guys drink at a Morgan function, if they still have them…..Think the club used to run big dinners years ago . I went to a small event at The Lygon Arms in Broadway & remember it well as in the afternoon I ate a crustless sandwich outside and got my tongue stung by a wasp. Luckily I only got half the sting as I ate the wasp !

Is there a Morgan cocktail? If not design one …..would it include Captain Morgan rum or include something lighter like sparkling Malvern water ? I think there should be one, a secret one that only TMers or Morgan enthusiasts know and can direct a barman to make. Ideas welcome.

Talking of beer, which I wasn’t but am now. Guinness for me has to be drunk cold on a hot day and is OK , stouts are OKish but sometimes have an after taste, Porters usually good but dark ‘black’ beers, tasting of nutty slack are favourites of mine .
Austria, Czech and Slovenia do great dark beers . I even have my own glass tankard at one place abroad and as soon as they see me it’s filled with Lasko Temno ……feels like home.
Be drinking that in two weeks
Going dry for two weeks so when I get it it will feel like I’m in the bar in Ice Cold in Alex !!!

PS When did Double Diamond come back and I miss the true Cream of Manchester which was proper when we visited our daughter at uni years ago.

We've only ever done one Morgan dinner, because it's not our thing, but when it was at Brooklands, and accommodation in Windsor was stupid money, we did the unthinkable.

The lasting memories were these......The welcome drinks gathering on the lawn under a gazebo, was "not sponsored" so you bought your own. We play safe under these circumstances going for Prosecco, and for the meal, often go for a South American Malbec, or Sauvignon Blanc.

Then of course it was clique central, so groups were like small herds, and the couples with no mates like us, stood alone.

The seating set up was really good for us, because we seated with a small group from Beligium and they were charming company.

Won't be doing that again.

My daughter hates formal events, so had a festival wedding last summer which was fantastic, everyone enjoyed and want us to do it again ! Son recently proposed to his Spanish girlfriend and whilst that is going to be more formal and in Spain. it starts at 7pm with Coaches at 5 am ! We sincerely hope we can stay the distance.
Got to pop over to try the food and Spanish wine which should be fun. I
Any wine recommendations ? It’s near Madrid so any direction or wine knowledge would be welcomed .I at least want to sound somewhat knowledgable in front of the brides parents !
I know if in the Friuli part of Italy, if you ask for a Chianti you get a stern look and a No , very much like their own area wines.
is it the same in Spain ?

All I can suggest Mike is that you do some research before you go. Wine is such a massive subject and even buffs can't know it all. So try to find out what you like. Try Verdejo (light bodied wine) and Rioja (Tempranillo grape). And do also try white Rioja, which can be amazing. Usually a blend but uses Viura grape.

So get googling

I support DaveW's comments. Lean into the local peoples respect for their own wines and ask for a quick wine and food tasting then encourage them impress you. My experience with the Spanish has always been positive. Local wines will go well with local foods if you are using a regional ceremony model. Also the local wines are often excellent and significantly better value than equivalent imported wines.

As a bit of a wine ignoramus, we always used to just go into the local supermarket and buy whatever was local and running low on stock. It was generally a pretty successful strategy, although we quickly learned not to bother to bring any home. What tastes wonderful on a balmy July evening on a campsite in Perigord doesn't tend to do so well on a cold November evening in Gloucestershire

But that's fine. Every region has its own speciality. We can do beer like nobody else. One of the icebreaker stories (complete with broad Gloucestershire accent) I used to use at the start of my presentations/lectures in front of international audiences always went down well.

"You all might have heard of British beer, served warm and flat, we love it, but international visitors often find it an acquired taste. For example we were sat in our local country pub one day when an American tourist came in and asked for pint of the local ale.

After one sip he decided it was disgusting. "Nobody can drink this muck!" he declared. "If anyone can drink 10 pints of this, I'll pay for all the drinks for all the customers for the whole week I'm visiting!"

So of course Old Joe stands up and say "Oi'll give it a go Sorr, but do you mind if I just pop out for 10 minutes first?"

"No worries" came the reply, so off the old chap went. Meanwhile the pints were poured and lined up on the bar. !0 minutes later in comes Old Joe, walks up to the bar, and downed the beers one after another in just a couple of minutes.

"Wow!" said the visitor. "Well, I'm a man of my word, so I'll happily pay up. But tell me, where did you go for those 10 minutes?"

"I popped round to the other pub in the village to check if I could do it."

I've had exactly the same experience... never bring a wine home from vacation, it just doesn't taste good in a different environment.

We Germans are best at that.

Interesting Daves experience, as we had similar at Mog 18, very clique -but it worked out well as they put us in with the 'foreigners' and we sat at a table with very friendly Germans and Belgians , then the next day helped change a tyre only to discover that the couple lived very close to me during the NZ summer ! The very next week we headed to Classic LeMans and met some lovely Morgan couples, some of whom are on here from time to time...

There's a huge amount of friendly rivalry in this area. We Brits can't help thinking that you do your best, hamstrung as you are by the Reinheitsgebot and your obsession with bottom-fermenting yeast.

Wait till I sit you down with a pint of Pig's Ear from one of my local breweries!

Why don’t the Germans and Austrians fill up the beer glasses ? Far too much headfroth and never full but nobody seems to mind .
I guess we Brits have been brought up to expect a full glass. If you could get a topper in it, you asked the barman to fill it up !
I do love their beer gardens but also the places with on-site breweries , adds to the ambience ……always good fun.
Have any of you who like motorbikes as well been to Harleywood (Euro bike week) That is an amazing event and I must Google how much beer they get through …..and the average age of the bikers !
