It is. If you have a Which? subscription I recommend checking out the recent articles on ADAS.

e.g.:
Quote
"When testing an MG4 last year, our lab testers noticed unusual behaviour with its lane-departure warning and lane-keep assistance systems.

On one occasion, when the tester drove on a narrow country road and had to pass another car coming the other way, the MG4’s lane-keep assistance steered away from the nearside edge of the road and towards the centre – and the oncoming car.

On a wider road with a clearly defined centre line, the lane-keep technology then twice decided that the car had left its intended lane and pulled it onto the wrong side of the road."

As mentioned earlier, these systems are mandatory on all new cars but as the Consumers Association has found, most of them have had little or no testing in typical UK driving conditions.

My wife's Volvo sometimes slams on the brakes for a micro second for no apparent reason.
Luckily we can turn off the lane assist function.

You have to love (this aspect) of the rate of change in technology. As the free subscription expires Waze on a smartphone becomes the preferred and more effective choice. Hey they don't really care about that, its all about shifting the tin.

Dont worry Alistair. What is allowed in the less developed areas of the world will not necessarily be allowed in H&S obsessed UK. Or indeed in Europe. Sometimes its a pity - contrast the German unlimited Autobahns with the attitude of our Welsh government who place permanent 50 limits on motorways and refuse to build roads.

We did at one time have a family Volvo S60 which was fitted with a built in TV. Quite handy when waiting parked up for SWMBO, but use when mobile was not allowed.

Most comfortable car we have ever had but thats a completely irrelevant comment.

I guess there's less in the way of predatory lawyers in China (or the manufacturers can make them go away!) ... my guess is that the reason you can't just 'switch it all off' in western cars but rather have to deliberately and consciously go through every item and cancel it manually every single trip is about the company lawyers covering the manufacturers arse if there's an accident. All your fault you irresponsible risk-taker! 🙂

Also there will inevitably the tendency to not be bothered to switch stuff off and just learn to live with it. I reckon 99% of owners will never bother to even learn how to disable any of the ADAS systems.
