Seems pretty high to me, 1 fire in 1000 installation-years; it implies a small development of 100 homes all with solar panels (similar to the development my daughter has just moved into) would experience a fire in the next 10 years.

If that resulted in a fatality in just 1 in 10 off these fires the risk would be classed as unacceptable by the HSE.

And then there's the insurance cost implication. Damage of £250k at a likelihood of 0.1% implies an annual expected loss of £250. That would be added to the insurance premium of everyone with a solar panel.
In their excitement for going green, I wonder if everyone remembers to notify their insurance company? It would also be interesting to hear from those who have, as to how much the premium increased by. (if at all)

I did. No specific increase for the panels, but I'm with NFU and they charge an arm and a leg anyway smile

/thread drift on

A question to the educated if you have a moment.

I am about to move to a Grade II listed building (not II*) and so the external view of the building is subject to approval.

There is a good area of roof that is South facing and with clear sunlight.

I did a Google and got flooded with dumb adverts and sponsored garbage from vendors.

Is there a good site you could recommend to guide around this situation.
If you have any experience in this situation can you provide feedback, understanding listing is building specific.

Alistair,

For initial research stick with .gov and local authority stuff like this

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1990/9

Also look up on the LA planning portal if the property has asked for permission to do anything previously

LA planners are a fickle bunch, sensible on some stuff, stupidly stubborn on others, they get mardy and pull the 'we'll just take you to court if you do that' line...despite the fact that building control has asked for it

I had a grade 11 cottage it was a nightmare there is very little you can do without listed buildings approval. They even objected to giving planning consent for a house on the land I owned next door even though it had a building on it before. Planning approved but listed put up a fight, did get it in the end.Good luck with your quest.

Most of Northern Italy has just announced that Euro 5 diesels will not be able to used in cities with more than 30 thousand inhabitants from October until April. The reason given is pollution but it is seen as a political push to force users into BEV. The fact is that all Euro 5 diesels have particle filters and produce less CO2 than petrol cars. What is lacking in Euro 5 cars is the system to cope with NOx emmisions. It has been discovered that some direct injection petrol cars produce more fine particles than a diesel with a filter and all the other sourses of fine carbon particles are the same, even for BEVs, that is to say tyres and brakes mainly.
Apparently production of ICE vehicles must stop in Europe by 2035 except for those using synthetic fuel!! I suspect that by and larger this is to cater for relatively low production enthusiast vehicles; Porsche, Ferrari, Morgan, etc.
I can't help but wonder how much of this is driven by the "green" lobby aided by manufacturers who want to force people to buy new cars.
Hopefully we will get until 2035 to use the new diesel Polo Euro 6d-ISC-FCM (AQ), whatever that may mean. By then, if I am lucky, I will be pushing towards my 89th birthday and will probably trade it in on a BEV mobility scooter.

It will be interesting to see who wins out the EU bureaucrats or the motor manufacturers on the 2035 ICE deadline. My money is on the bureaucrats, as they will extend the no go ICE zones at an alarming rate in the years to come.

So even if you can still buy and own an ICE, you most likely won't be able to drive it anywhere, or the cost of doing so will be so prohibitive it will only be the very wealthy that can indulge that ICE passion. My bet there will be increasing more completely no go areas for ICE starting with urban areas and then growing outwards to encompass everything. eventually. And once they eg claim the High Streets back for pedestrians, even non ICE vehicles will become increasingly more restricted in their access to urban areas. Goodness knows what the future holds out for rural communities often with poor public transport infrastructure once the bureaucrats start their anti vehicle campaign on their small town and village centres..

Just diverting back to solar panels in homes, I was chatting today to an ex-colleague in the risk team at BP who is now an independent fire consultant (and used to be the Chief Fire Officer in Norfolk), he said the issues with solar panel fires relate to batteries located in the roof space which are often installed to store power and then deliver it later when needed. Said installations are often (a) placed in a location where the batteries can overheat and (b) the batteries are not enclosed in a suitable enclosure. The result will be fires starting which spread and are difficult to extinguish.

I think I'll ask him to have a look at my daughter's installation!

I enjoy the solar installer Youtube clips where they review other installers' mistakes. No inverter in the attic was an obvious one (and certainly not batteries!) - one I didn't get in my install was to have an isolation switch in the attic for the panels. Makes perfect sense...

Paul, clambering about in attics can be dangerous and perhaps more so in some attics than others and if one adds the ageing process to that..?
Perhaps to have all methods of isolation easily accessible to the householder as a priority..?
Just thinking in type..(-:
