I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question as it is probably one for the older supersport guys and girls as they have cut outs in the bonnet for such an issue…

As some of you know, I am the current custodian of my late fathers 4/4 which is running quite a unique set up which I am trying to get reacquainted with after not really having much involvement with the car for a number of years in the mechanical sense.
The throttle body trumpets sit very close to the bonnet and wing, and therefore the options for air filters are very limited. The engine has already sucked in a foam sock, which caused the throttle to stick open, so I am now looking to obtain some sort of clip on wire mesh. However, Jenvey do not supply anything that will fit, so I am looking for alternatives.

My current options are to either fit smaller trumpets, or find something (wire mesh) that will clip onto an 89mm trumpet but with a minimal outer diameter as there is very little room between the edges of the trumpets. Will smaller trumpets have any effect on the air intake or did my dad go OTT with the 89mm’s?

Any recommendations of either a solution or a supplier will be much appreciated.

What about a mesh grille before slipping over the foam sock ? (4 gang oval style)

Hi Jon, I hope you are both well?

The problem I have is that there should be a 20mm gap between the trumpets and the ends of the socks, which there is not enough room for due to the proximity of the bonnet, so I have decided to get rid of the sock filters all together as they are causing running issues.

I was hoping to find something on the internet that would effectively just clip on, but I am struggling to find anything suitable.
I have found something that might fit since posting earlier, so I will give the seller a call tomorrow and ask them for some advice.

The gauze is available separately and could be just what I am looking for… I will let you know.

Well you do need some form of air filter for road use but you do not have much room around that front TB. How about some form of air box with a pipe to the filter as on the Elan. You sould not have anything too near to the end of the trumpets as it affects the power at at high rpm. My air box is too near the trumpet on no4 pot.
The air box could be mounted back to front. Pic just for some ideas.

Isn't that why bonnet scoops were developed. Not cheap but would give you room. I think on here some made an airbox for Jenvey throttle bodies.

I had a sports Mini in the distant past and it had short trumpets like yours. In those days, mid 70's you could buy the trumpets with or without mesh grills attached. Mine I hasten to add had no mesh grills. You're right in that the foam socks break down and quite quickly too! I removed them after one dark night coming home from Aldershott to Kent whilst in the Army and picking bits out of the one blocked carb. I ran that car with just the open trumpets for another 3 years then gave it to my brother when posted to Germany and he did the same before selling it on. Look at the old TR engined cars they had open trumpets!

Yes I think I would probably fashion a clip on mesh that covered all 4 trumpets but unless you are doing some form of off road I'd use it like that!

Looking at your set up is of interest as the 4/4 is running a Lotus Twin Cam. The trumpets in your picture look quite a bit smaller in diameter and this is something else I am looking at to try and make more room. It also opens up more options for the gauze filters.

I don’t think an air box would fit without some major surgery to the wings and bonnet, which I don’t want to do.

It is the distant past that has sent me down this route of trying to find clip on metal gauze filters. I swear I used to see all kinds of options wandering round the auto jumbles at various meets that I attended with my dad when I was a kid.
