Yes those trumpets have been reduced in diameter in order to fit between the air box cover mounting bolts.
I did realise there might be problems mounting the air box on you car, but any form of filters would help with engine life. And as you may or may not know a twink is not cheap to rebuild!

Yes, I am fully aware of the rebuild costs, I was at the helm on our way to Le Mans a few years ago when the engine let go, Dad was sat at the side of me when it bellowed oil out of the louvres. Fortunately it was nothing to do with me, but a cracked block. Roll on a bad engine rebuild by a well known specialist and a couple of years of poor running and it finally got sorted with another rebuild at Norris Motorsport in Alfreton where the Webbers were replaced with a throttle body. I have had very little involvement with the car since the rebuild, so I am on a learning and reacquainance curve now. The socks that were fitted had reached the end of their life, so to save it swallowing another one, I have removed them completely. I am yet to run the car without, but I will be taking it a short run tomorrow into Derbyshire just for a shakedown.
I have several options now to try and find some sort of solution before Oulton Park at the end of this month for the Gold Cup event.

Does the reduced diameter trumpets have any effect on the running of the car? I can’t imagine it would do but worth asking the question.

I think air filters can be overrated at times, dependent on the environment and the mileage you drive they are really not needed. I have over 115,000 miles on my 4/4 and have never had any air filters just a wire gauze cover to stop insects going in, I live on 2 miles of dirt dusty track and drive our mountain roads of the same construction. I will await the incoming.

I have a K&N cone filter (Orion) done about 20k clean as a whistle. I once had an Alfa Spider '84 vintage, twin Strombergs with trumpets no filter no problem.

You could be unlucky with something getting into a trumpet ... I'd be more concerned if they were downdraught TBs though as plenty use sidedraught carbs with open trumpets.

I used to cut up a pair of ladies tights. May not look pretty but effective and cheap and easy to renew.

That sounds like a sad tale with the problems going to LM. And yes I know from experience that not all engine rebuilders understand the TC.

I had to reduce the dia to fit the air box cover so It's alway run like that. It's was mapped as the pics show.
I know from my playing with kart and MotoX engines that the better the filter is the longer the engine lasts!
I do realise that things are a tight fit around the TB's on your engine but as an off the wall suggestion, could you what they did on the Escort T/C and off set the engine towards the LH side of the car to make more room for the trumpets? Or as Lotus did with the Elan fit a different engine mount on the RH side to give the carbs more room. Every little helps.

Burgundymog, yes engines run fine without air filters, they just don't last as long. If you are going to keep the car it's much cheaper to fit a good air filter than to keep rebuilding the engine!!

Well, 61 years,122,000 miles and 1 engine rebuild (96,000 miles) seems to have lasted quite long without using air filters. Maybe I will fit an air filter and it can go to 250,000 miles without another engine rebuild!!!
