That Evo review made me laugh, Simon, when it mentioned "poultry" performance- Bill, I think they may have been referencing the KFC edition, where you get a free family bucket with every purchase  As for track days, absolutely spot on - it always puts a smile on my face when I see people driving an MX5/Miata/Eunos well, passing far more powerful machinery.

how old an MXr do I have to buy to avoid such junk as lane assist ?

KFC= Funny.
I went to visit my Super3 yesterday with a bag of supplies and helped sort some of the accessories still to be installed. There was a Lotus Emira with the AMG motor/slush box- didn't drive it, was pretty impressed with the fit and finish. No room for a dog, though.

I feel ya. Are you in Britain? I went through a slew of supercars- 6 Ferraris, a Diabo 6.0, a Porsche GT2 set up as a club sport as well as a bunch of others, including a 993 c4 cabriolet and a pre-war car. I bought a Super 3 recently to get away from bikes --I'm getting old, I don't need speed as such. But you want a stick, I assume, a visceral drive, and something that isn't a headache to deal with. I had two of the newer Mini Coopers- one was set up as a "works" car and it was a "twitchy" daily driver. I'd look at serviceability and parts. FIAT was never really successful in the States- a stepchild at best (though I had a 124 sport back in the day and always loved the feel and look of the Italian cars). I'll follow this thread with interest. If you are in Britain or UK/EU, you have different choices than us Yanks.
Not a bad place to be, where you are asking this question. I get it. Yes I am in the UK. Not sure that its such a good place because of overcrowded roads, ridiculous speed limits ( our town limit is now 20mph) and lots and lots of cameras and traps. I sold the Ferrari today. Part of the reason was the difficulty in using it as it was designed and in a way that I enjoyed. That said I have always found that thrashing a small car is more fun than a big car - where could I use the 180+mph capability of the Ferrari. I will now try and make friends with my wife's Mini Cooper S which in town traffic is as fast as the Ferrari could be used, but somehow a bit like a go cart.. Twitchy as you say. Will I buy another car - I dont know but if I do its likely either to be an MX5 ( you call them MIATA I believe) or a Lotus Elise with the V6.

Sir P Thanks. Thats useful. I was startled on a test drive when it kicked in - I thought the steering was failing. But on british roads with poor lane markings anyway, it was useless. Particularly on country roads where, when visibility is good enough, I use the full width of the road as is entirely legal.

My Volvo XC40 has lane assist but it can easily be de-selected and then will stay off. The only way it will come back on, is if you deliberately select it. On some other makes, although you can turn it off, it will automatically engage again by default, every time you start a journey. Worth checking how Mazda do it.

Dejay ... that's sensible from Volvo ... my Nephew has a works VW Amrok and he has to sort through three menu pages to get rid of it every time he gets in ... and it's dangerously intrusive on country roads. .... good for Volvo!

Most vehicles seem to allow you to disengage the legislated 'safety' warnings/assistance (many even allowing you to hot link the 'turning off' to a button on the steering wheel); however, I'd be surprised if post 2024 cars allow it to be permanently disabled and didn't reset the system once the engine was turned off.
My XC60, pre 2024, would allow me to turn the system off permanently - as per DeeJay's comments - however, unless I am mistaken, post 2024 now works as per my comment above. Furthermore, it is my understanding that the reset part is legislated but again, my interpretation and understanding may be wrong. On my daily driver, it resets but I've programmed the system to a button which I press when I get in the car, and start the engine, which I've programmed to have the warnings I want in place and the ones I don't, turned off.

post 2024 now works as per my comment above. My understanding is that 2024 model year onwards reset to turning everything back to annoying every time you stop the engine.
