Ian, that is a clever unit - I'll pass the name of the unit on to our Rescue friends to recommend.

After carting my Honda izy petrol to Prescott earlier today I'm contemplating selling it and replacing with a battery mower where the battery can be used in a range of power tools (e.g. small chainsaw, leaf blower etc.). Either that or buying a small trailer (but will still want some of the electric tools). My shoulders are suffering tonight!

Ditto Graham. As I get lectricity at 7p a unit by having an EV it seems to make sense.

John, having just done this exercise, here are my findings (for what they are worth) based on chatting with various garden machinery suppliers, testing a few and also speaking with two friends who run successful garden companies:

The Hayter electric mowers are great - tech has come on a long way. All the benefits of Hayter but lighter and with out the noise and maintenance of petrol. One of the Hawks would probably be enough to do the lawn size you mention but worth checking with a dealer.

As Calypso has said above, the Husqvana is the Rolls Royce of automated lawn care. Not inexpensive in the slightest but the latest versions use gps positioning (not wire) and what they can do is very impressive. As Ian suggested, there is no need for objects or animals, domestic or otherwise, to fear... the collision avoidance is akin to autodrive cars. They operate on a cut little and often premise because they mulch but the results I saw were impressive. However, entry for the new ones sits at about £2,000 with the associated hardware piece you need for the gps!

I'd love to be able to switch to automated lawn care, but we've got an old cottage garden with a load of small lawns divided by paths, steps and steep banks so our ancient Honda still has to do the business. Some sort of robot sheep might be better

I bought one, an Echo, to do the from lawn which is 100sqm. Yes it works but its flimsy - I'd give it 5 years. Next door neighbour has a Ryobi, and says the same thing. Both os us would replace them with Honda petrol mowers because the simply last and always work. My Honda for the back lawn is approaching 20 years old and I have yet to service it - much the same for my Honda cultivator. Nest door neighbour also has a Honda mower and again says the same thing.

And as for electric chain saws, dont go near them!

Are we really comparing lawnmowers on TM.... (-: Yeah, well ok..I have an 80 volt battery electric self propelled Hyundai, with an 18"cutting width, if I need the exercise I can opt to push it, and that way I can get all the grass cut on one charge, but if feeling lazy, I can engage the drive and get most of it done, easy to break up into sections given the lie of the land most of it is reasonably flat...
Must be about 400sq yds of grass/moss/clover..but if there are any with real interest I will make a more accurate measure... Only my second year of ownership... got fed up buying petrol or syphoning it out of the Mog and, with having petrol stored in a plastic "can" kicking about the garage.... EV seemed the simplest way to go, much quieter too... So far, so good.

Mrs Calypso has a Honda petrol mower, self propelled and swears by it. It's built like brick sh1t house and all the contractors round here use them.
