You can put on 132" big bore kit from S&S. That should break crush drives, tear up the trans, and rip the teeth off the belt. Check it out at... www.sscycle.com/Product/X-Wedge-Series/Enginec49/

I doubt you would be able to tear up that tranmission...the Miata engine is extremely overbuilt

I completely agree, which is why Im still not sure the logic of using a belt on this car.

The belt is maintenance free and commonly used on Harleys so well proven.
The alternative of chain drive would mean regular adjustment and oiling, unless it was designed to run in an enclosed oil bath and the other route...shaft drive and bevel box would just add to the unsprung weight, complexity and cost.

Given the factory are good friends with BMW I would have thought that they could have aquired a suitable shaft drive from BMW Motorbikes -- after all their 1600 6Cyl bike must shove out some serious torque. Perhaps this is for the Mk 2!!!!

obviously all of this is hypothetically assuming that the belt drive wont be able to sustain extra power, which we have no way of really knowing yet.

I'm losing touch. But then I pretty much stopped looking at Bee Ems when carburettors changed to FI and the big ourers got rather complex electrically...

Except, we know pretty well that the first belt type was too narrow, otherwise they wouldn't have gone with a slimmer rear tyre and wider belt. The only reason for that would be strength, as far as I can tell. It certainly can't be looks (like on some HDs with extremely wide belts). Edit: Shaft drive would be awesome.
