Guenter: thanks for writing down how you felt driving the car,
for improvements to the engine: S&S certifies some dealers to tune their engines, in Heerlen (south netherlands) is such a dealer

I also have reached out to S&S a number of times and with no responses. I contacted S&S exclusively via email and I presume that I could attempt to call. What really shocks me is that I haven't even gotten a generic email back. i.e. "thank you for your interest in..."

Yes Guenter, a most interesting write-up. Certainly, it does not feel under-powered, but then I have not driven it 'in anger' and as you say the torque is tremendous. woohoo

Once cars are with customers, it will be interesting to hear comments on the performance (and the handling!). shocked2

Do you know who is certified in the UK Steven to tune S&S engines?

I just had a call with a nearby S&S spacialist in Germany (20 Km from my home). He told me that there is a rev limiter for the first 20 hours installed in the engine`s mapping for running in. During my test drive there was a cut at 4.800 U/min. and that is why it felt not very strong. He told me the bore/stroke ratio is square, so revs around 6.000 U/min won`t be a problem. Tuning won`t be a problem as well. At first it would be usefull to have a look at the intake and exhaust system, if the engine can breath freely. Remapping can be done easily. But also mechanical changes are possible. So 120 or even 145 bhp won`t be a problem.

Best wishes Guenter

Aeroman,
The S&S site dealer locator lists some 10 S&S dealers in the UK

Cheers!

Hi,
I have read this info:
"limiter for the first 20 hours installed in the engine`s mapping for running in"

(from a testrun of M3W-Demo in a Swedish magazine)

This is a picture of a computer hooked up to an engine in the factory on 24/10/2011. This mapping was being installed on a customer car

http://pj.snoobonline.com/_MG_3338.jpg

If you look at it in detail, you will notice that the limiter should be at around 5750 rpm. If Morgan did de-tune the engine via mapping, it should be enough to just flash the ECU with a normal mapping to get it up to its full potential.

The question here really is: why would morgan de-tune the engine? Is it the beltdrive that can't take the power? I think I remember some issues about that, no?

Upping the power could be dangerous for you car and even yourself if something was to go wrong with the rear wheel, so I suggest that someone tries to get some information from the factory about if they de-tuned it and why.

Its possible the detune (if this is the case) is for mechanical longevity (i.e. the belt as mentioned) or maybe its to limit the inevitable wheelspin that greater power would bring.

Also, PJH, your collection of photos from your recent visit are quite nice. You took shots of things which hadnt otherwise been seen at this point in photos. Thank you for sharing!

Most of the cars that I have seen are the chrome variants, but this black one looks really sharp as does the body color painted "radiator".

for those who haven't seen the pictures of the factory visit:
http://pj.snoobonline.com/2011%20Morgan%20Factory%20visit/

I don't think they would detune it just to eliminate wheelspin... it's up to the driver to drive it to its limits, if it spins up the tire in 2nd gear while comming out of the corner... that's the drivers fault really.

I think I would solve a wheelspin issue with a Toyo R888 tire smile but that would probably put a tremendous amount of stress on the car, not that I think it would fall apart after seeing the structure behind the body panels.

Are there any tires available apart from the stock ones for the front end of this car?

There are a couple of manufacturers who make the classic 4.00-19 Rims like the Avon 65S 4.00-19 Morgan is using. Interestingly, this tire seems as though it was more commonly a read tire rather than a front tire in the past. Morgan probably went with the Avon due to its classic tire look compared to a modern racing type tire.
