On my 1977 plus 8 you need to turn the key to the off position, then press a little tab on the steering lock above the key in, and then turn the key a little further and then you can extract it. The tab is above the key. It's a bit of a fiddle with no apparent advantage that I can see.... On the other hand, on the 69 4/4, the key will just fall out. And on my first car, 50 years ago, an Mg Midget, a screwdriver was a perfectly good substitute for the key, as the thief who took it out of the local pub car park demonstrated. They did not get far, as the throttle cable broke 3 miles down the road. I miss that car .... There you go...flaky parts quality on Mogs can have an advantage

Thank you Jon,
I searched for a button and found none. I was able to push key in and turn to remove. I had tried this before, but I think it may have been sticky. All is well now.

Gary, to prevent issue happening again suggest cleaning out ignition lock barrel with brake cleaner (which doubles as switch cleaner). With clean paper towel underneath you should see when all the muck is flushed out. Excess cleaner will evaporate quickly. Then lubricate with oil - I actually oil the key then push it in/out of lock a few times to get lube deep into barrel, before wiping key clean.

I would take it out. Spray full of wd40 or similar. Leave overnight , respray and then tap vertically to release any muck.

You can get some spray lubes that contain PTFE, this was recommended to me by a locksmith many years ago

I find that oil just attracts and holds dust, transforming it magically into muck, thereby accelerating the need to do it all over again. Try a graphite powder based lubricant, such as "lution". I use it on all my locks, both cars and house.

You should only use Graphite powder on locks as anything else tends to attract muck and gum it up.

I was involved with locks for over 40 years and graphite was always used in cylinders. You can need a graphite (lubrication) puffer . Amazon, B&Q or any lock shop. For a quickie grate a pencil lead over the key.

Yep, if its really grotty brake cleaner is a good starting point. I had always been an advocate of graphite but have found that silicone spray is really good. It has a volatile propellant which evaporates quickly and cleans but leaves a well spread small amount of silicone lube to the internal surfaces.
