Their Embo and Dartmoor cars may fall into that category, but, for me, the copies of blowers etc (though beautifully crafted) somehow devalue the true survivors .... purely a personal reaction and I'm not going to get into drawn out discussions on the merits of preserving coachbuilding skills or 'how original are originals' what with the 'trigger's broom' effect .... standing next to an original survivor has an emotional as well as an engineering impact .... purely subjective, but then many wonderful things are! 🙂

Both the Pur Sang and Petersen cars are examples of fine craftsmanship .... I'd just never buy one when I win the lottery *

I get where K is coming from re the real thing and the value of it`s history, even if it might likely have a bit of Triggers broom built in.... As per the English High Court case of Old No 1 and it`s claim to it`s identity as such, all be it not entirely original as the Bentley to win Le Mans two years in a row....Interesting as to judgements on Originality Vs Historically correct...(-:
If you have watched Ivan`s vids over the years and not always requiring to read between the lines (-: Given it seems at times it may have taken all of Ivan`s..err.. ingenuity to "restore" Bugatti`s over many years, it would seem that there may be a few Bugatti`s that may not also be entirely "original" but still carry the claim to be historic vehicles, some perhaps even claiming correctly or otherwise a degree of provenance relative to famous individuals or events.... ?
I don`t think I van was alone in terms of repair processes of significant vehicles...? (-:

P.S. My Morgan is not original as per ex factory.... I suspect few older Mogs may be, but then many folk have come to own a Morgan without the need to win the lottery..? (-:

There is never one right answer and most people will have a view on what they consider to be the fundamental criteria of what determines originality in their eyes, for some it's can be all about the chassis plate/VIN number, To each their own opinion.

Where I think Petersen adds 'value' is that he takes basically out of favor models such a the Bentley VI, which are heading for the 'old car heaven' and re bodies in rarer and more desirable form and updates the mechanics and electrics etc. to make them easier, and more usable in modern driving environments. .Possibly Petersen's created supply chains may help keep older models on the road.

I'd take a Petersen version over an original 20/30's Bentley any day. To me that doesn't dilute the earlier cars in anyway, as the original whatever that means, is still what it is, and probably keeps their values in relative check, unlike many other low volume exclusive brands that have sky rocketed because there is no alternative. Imagine what may happen to say Ferrari 250 or 330 GT prices if someone re bodied the less popular 4 seater saloon versions.

I knew many years ago Pilkinson, who used to take Roll Royce Silver Cloud and Bentley S series saloon cars and cut the roof off them to create Mulliner style convertibles of which there were very few originals. Very much not looked upon favorably in the day, are now quite acceptable cars. Amazing how times change.

Indeed ... why I was at pains to emphasise that it was my entirely subjective personal gut feeling ..... Petersen are restorers and suppliers of parts that help keep original cars on the road (and more power to them for that) ... I suspect that one day someone twigged that if you put all the spare bits they manufactured into one big pile it was pretty much a full Bentley ...and they ran with it🙂

Wonderful craftsmanship but, for me, their own designs sit easier than the copies.

K, I quite agree with you. The whole idea of Pur Sang building these in the first place was so mere mortals could afford one. Have a look at Jay Leno taking one of these out for a spin.
But i suppose $200.000 is a lot cheaper than the ones made in the 1930s. But i must say, I think these cars should be looked at as new builds. I remember reading once when Sir Thomas Sopwith saw a new build Triplane and told the builders that it was not a replica but a new build, just coming off the production line 60 years later!

Peterson may be for Bentley similar to what Singer is to Porsche, as for that which either might be valued in monetary terms, that is for the market to decide.
While attending a classic car event on the island of Bute some years back, I was inexpertly grabbing a few pics of the cars as they arrived with a dew of the entrants dismounted and gathering in the same spot where I was standing, when in came this Blower Bentley which looked to me like it was straight out of the box...I knew nothing of Peterson back then. As this wonderous machine drove past I heard the comment... "Aye it`s nice but it is no a REAL one." Which left me confused, once it was parked up I grabbed some pics of it.

Cant remember if it was the same year but a friend of mine had a business providing accommodation at the LM 24 hrs whuch I attended in the Morgan 2002, if memory serves. At one of the chateau locations my friend had provided pre-errected tents, toilet facilities and much more with all sorts of folk and marques choosing to make use of the facilities provided. Twas there I came across a very used looking Bentley which had been driven down to LM from Ayrshire, and was spotted admiring it by the chap who drove it down to LM...Apparently the owner just lent the Bentley to him and a group of adventurous friends to drive to France for the race. Apparently the Bentley was not at all happy at the steady pace on the m/way and burned oil at an alarming rate at constant speed, thus they decided to take to the back roads where the speed was variable and the old girl seemed so much more content and rewarded the crew by drinking much less oil..

Quite by chance that same Bentley attended the event on Bute and I grabbed a few pics of it at the time. The story related to me re the drive to LeMans made the old girl a bit special and caused me to wonder, if only it could talk, just how many other stories it might have to tell.... ? (-:

I suspect I still have some of the pics I took of both Bentley`s and there is no comparison in terms of perfection of the new out of the box blower to the old girl with aspects of it`s usee and perhaps abuse by modern-day standards of appreciation seem to remember the dash had suffered some modification, and likewise the wiring thereof.... BUT.... Which would You choose... Hmm..?

I suspect I can dig out a pic or two I took at the time, should there be any interest..... I think I posted them on eMog in times past, if not on TM at a later date, as ever my memory fails me at times... Shrug.

I'd like to see them George ... but maybe under 'cars mostly' so as not to hijack this thread further 🙂
