Finished the installation of sub woofer in Morton, my Roadster. Whilst hooking up to radio for testing was a doddle and proved its worth, installing it in the top of passenger footwell was some journey, but now thankfully fully installed as below. Still it kept me off the mince pies and my back now has time to recover. Note picture taken looking up from floor and is completely hidden from above.



Although it fitted near perfectly in the upper footwell space the non level undersurface, being the passenger side of the bulkhead, was littered with protruding bolt threads. Several could be shortened by fitting shorter bolts but nuts still protruded a little. The heater box mounting bolts are captive so the ends were cut as short as possible with a Dremel tool. A 10mm thick piece of self adhesive neoprene was stuck to the underside of the sub woofer, actually the top as it was installed inverted from its under seat design. This took account of the remaining bulkhead protrusions. A support bracket was fabricated from a length of 50 x 25mm aluminium angle with a cutout to accomodate the curvature of main bass speaker and bolted through the bulkhead that forms the end of footwell. Cabling was hidden by routing it behind lightly glued top edges of carpet such that it appeared close to upper door hinges. A further two brackets were fabricated from 30 x 3mm strip to support front edges of sub woofer, bolted to back of bulkhead which is also not vertical hence need for bend. Great care was taken when drilling holes to avoid existing cables.

The unit fits snugly resting on front bracket with the thick neoprene ensuring it can't move vertically and the two brackets at the front hold unit firmly in place attached to same with self tapping screws into 10mm thick wooden casing.

Panicked when first testing in-situ as virtually no bass from unit. Great relief though when a slide switch was operated that brings into play a low pass filter. Must have been damp in the contacts whilst left in my cold garage. Now all working perfectly hooked up to my Sony Bluetooth DAB/FM radio with full control via Sony app on my phone.

Very neat and professional installation, blends nicely into the background and could be have been fitted from new. The only real difference being that your installation was most likely and probably better finished off.

Regarding factory build, I did discover a nut and bolt under the air filter housing (unique to Roadster 3.7) that was simply there to fill a hole in horizontal part of aluminium bulkhead which had clearly been driiled to provide a third mounting point for plastic air filter base. Since there wasn't a matching hole in air filter base I drilled one to employ this when fitting shorter bolts, with rubber mount washer sandwiched between to match other two.

Changed my Clarion speakers for Focal RCX-100 - AUDITOR SERIES fairly easy fit all the existing holes lined up, just the twisting of my ancient body that gave me grief.

Well, not today.
I had the idea for some time to make a cover on the engine but after replacing the spark plugs it seemed time to finally start. Although it was not so bad with the water infiltration. Only on the first cylinder there was rust on the spark plug



Wanted something like the one available at Williams (very nice but expensive)



So a DIY job. As always, it starts with a cardboard template.



Still have diamond plate left over from previous projects, but that is not ideal for water drainage. Or to apply an emblem.



A 0.8mil flat alu sheet will be good, easily machinable.



There are four screw holes M6 in the valve cover, on this I placed threaded bushing for support and on top a screw with a wide flat head to hold it down. On the other side I drilled two holes in the support for the cooling tube and a slot in the folded flaps so that the height can be adjusted to give some slope for water drainage.



On the side against the valve cover a u-profile rubber has been applied to minimize infiltration.



A sticker as Finishing Touch and job don.



After a first test drive, everything turns out to be okay, but to know if it affects the engine temperature, we will have to wait until the summer.

Nice Job Matt. It shouldn't affect engine temp. I've done this twice and both were unaffected.

I have the Williams one, doesn't affect temp.

Removed the left brake caliper to send it out for rebuilding.

Pulled the carburetors to have them rebuilt...

Having just got on with the gear-stick on the type-9 conversion (done by the previous owner) being just a bit far away under the dash for years, I've finally fitted a quickshift lever .... I took the opportunity to get the blowtorch out and bend it to drop the gear-knob nicely to hand .... while I was at it I fitted a brass saddle between the stick and selector ... end result feels nicely 'snicky', positive and comfortable.

Only tried it sat in the garage as I have a lot on and it's chucking it down here, but looking forward to getting out for a test drive in the next few days.
