I have an OBD2 scanner (MOTOPOWER MP69033 OBD2 Scanner Universal Car Engine Fault Code Reader, CAN Diagnostic Scan Tool for All OBD II Protocol Cars), but it doesn't work with my Plus Six. Plug it in and all that happens is something under the bonnet starts to tick, which continues for a minute or two after removing the scanner.

Anyone had better luck with another scanner?

Ihave a cheap ebay one that worked on my trads. I use torque as an app. It works OK.

I have the same as well as the Motopower, I’m afraid it doesn’t work on the BMW B58, I assume it also wouldn’t work on the Plus Four. Either that or my system doesn’t work as expected.

Can you or have you tried your kit on your CX Plus Four John thinking

As a minimum it should read the latest ISO 15765-4 (CANBUS) protocol which has been mandatory on all new cars sold in the USA since 2008 including BMW's so not that new. A popular ELM427 Bluetooth dongle linked to say the Torque app on a phone should work well enough to provide and clear fault codes and display dynamic engine data which is why I asked.

Richard yes. The core bits work.
The map of where you go how fast doesn't but you can see error codes and create a dashboard

Thanks John. From what I can glean BMW use a couple of other protocols running in parallel with CANBUS. ENET (Ethernet) and EDIABAS (Electronic Diagnosis and Information protocol). The Bimmercode app should work with the first two using dongle below although not cheap.

Thanks Richard and John. I think I was trying to use Car Scanner with the dongle. I'll get Torque and give it another go.

Actually got it working using the MOTOPOWER, but limited information. I'll need to try the bluetooth dongle and Car Scanner again, then Torque if that doesn't work.

One of my other toys is a BMW Z4, the talk there’s is of Carley (dongle and paid app on phone) ; bimmercode (laptop) and a couple of dedicated hand held scanners

I followed their advice and bought an Aurophix and it’s worked very well

https://ebay.us/m/oOGbF9

Bought used for about £50 it quickly diagnosed a faulty brake sensor and paid for itself first time of use.

2012 Plus 4 in Sport Green. Much comfier than the Plus 8!
