So should I create ventilation holes in the cover or keep the moisture contained in the pit? How about rigging up some power in the garage, filling the pit and installing a suitable car lift instead?

Thanks for the replies. I think it will be no vents in the lid, re-point the brickwork and then tank with a slurry solution - in the summer when it's all dried out.
