Apologies for a question which must have arisen many times before but I need to clean up a few scuff marks on the running boards of my 22 Plus Four. I'd prefer to blame the previous owner but in truth I know I'm the prime culprit but when I've looked at scuff repair solutions on line a number of them recommend caution which has so far deterred me from trying. My first feeble attempt with a j cloth and a drop of acetone left more scratch marks than I'd started with so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If the scuffs are on the protective film, it can be testing. The surface is soft and so it is easy to make it worse. Start with something like glass shine, which should be alcohol based. Don't go mad. Don't generate heat. Use a microfibre. Then move on to a Polish, not a wax. Polish has low level abrasives. After that, possibly white spirit, and then progressively more abrasive, such as plastic polish, but always slow and easy. Sometimes the surface damage is beyond saving and will need a new application.

I thought they self repaired with a little from say a hairdryer

That depends on the type of/ manufacturer of the film. Self healing is only a feature of high quality films and if this is factory installed, I would question which film they use. Previously they outsourced PPF and I know that film was not self repairing. Next time I speak with the MMC, I’ll ask what the current situation is.

Also, it doesn’t require a hairdryer - a reasonable ambient temperature will do (saying that, with the current weather… that may be some wait!)

The above implies that PPF has been fitted, I don't think that's a given. The OP doesn't seem to mention it ...

If it isn't PPF the scuff marks would likely polish out, unless they are through to the undercoat.

And if it is PPF, doesn't hot water work well?

If no ppf you can get a colored wax polish containing t cut. It helps but isn't permanent.
Acetone on paint is not good. It removes nail varnish which is paint

PPF...... I seem to recall the firm who did mine told me to use isopropyl for scuffs, sparingly. As Dave W said, don't go mad.
Hair dryer was for helping remove the film, starting by slightly lifting a corner a teeny, ween amount and playing heat beneath.
I'll try to find details, a firm in Melton Mowbray did mine but it was almost 20 years ago.

And yes, I did buy a pie!

I did my own . Not easy on curves but has protected the running boards well. Yes heat helps also removal.

From the original post assume there is PPF on the area. Carry on as above but try to avoid solvents!
If not then polishing the bare paint using a polish such as Autoglym might work. Depends on the depth of the scuffs/scratches. Hand polishing with a suitable applicator should work for light scuffs. Take your time and repeat as necessary. When done remember to re-wax ( or any other protective coat) to finish. There are more aggressive polishes/scratch removers to be had. Start with gentle versions for safety! Practice on something else if possible.
