The key issue with E10 is storage life...it goes off...and absorption of water...corrosion. Yes, advice I received was to always try and store brimful, or hang some silica gel into the fuel filler hose to absorb moisture. I've chucked some Stabil in before, but never really know how effective that kind of stuff is,

I use Stabil over winter. It seems to help

I run the MGB on E10 all year round - don't have any bad effects, and average about 28-30mpg. With the Morgan and Harley I tend to stick a tank or so of E5 in at the start of the season, then run on E10 but try and overwinter with E5. Contrary to a certain opinion several posts above, Fuel mileage is important - if I ran the MG on superunleaded it would be an extra £20 or so a month. I rather spend that money down the pub. It's also one of the reasons I went for a 4/4 originally - I wanted to be able to drive it all year, any distance without worrying too much about the cost of fuel. (I get about 38mpg). My driving is pretty unsophisticated, so wouldn't really notice any performance difference between E5 and E10 I was intrigued by your comments on running E10 in your MGB, as early B's had soft valve seating so were leaded fuel but as yours is a post 76 MGB the engine could run on unleaded fuel suggesting E5 97+ but obviously you don't get pinking as expected using E10.....learn something new every day

I was told to buy 98 when I would have the car parked for longer periods

I always use E5, which (I'm told) often doesn't contain any ethanol as the '5' part is the maximum allowable. Not quite. The 5 in E% stands for 5% ethanol In the UK E5 is 'up to a maximum of 5%' There are still some fuels out there that are marked as E5 but have little to no ethanol, although this can vary by location. (Esso Synergy Supreme +99. Tesco Momentum 99 and Shell V Power 99) although Esso was ethanol free in the South of England in particular, as of Sept 2023 they announced that they would be starting the transition to e5 proper, so i reckon by now, ethanol free fuel is unlikely to be obtainable If you do a search, AI is still quoting the pre 2023 situation so not to be believed..

If you do a search, AI is still quoting the pre 2023 situation so not to be believed.. Frustrating - I quoted from an Oct 25 post on the FB Moggy Minor group that I'd remembered reading. However, in hindsight there's a good chance he's probably quoted from AI. I have enough problems with the kids at school getting AI to do all their homework to try and appear clever.(and then consistently coming massively unstuck under proper exam conditions). Yet another frigging race to the bottom.......

When I had my 2002 Plus8 with Gems management " intermitent random misfire" was triggering the MIL occasionally. A statistical package in there analysed the running and this then triggered the fault reading. In the end after checking as much as possible I found that using V-Power or other ethanol free brands cured it. It re-appeared occasionally when reverting to 95 fuel. So I just used the 98 but if none available topped up with 95. I moved to alternating use of 98/95 and the problem went away. I did consider Millers treatment as that was great when I had my Focus turbo diesel for commutes and higher mileage. Car ran well and extra mpg that saved me me £25 per bottle of additive. I didn't get round to trying it in the Plus8. Emissions at MOT was always on the cusp for lambda but only just. Italian tune-up on the way could well have helped! I did have to replace one post cat sensor that had a failed pre-heater but sold the car before the next MOT. Sold the car with 74k mileage and running well. I tend to use 98 in the Plus Four but the occasional 95 looks ok.

Amazing especially as E15 first went on sale in the US in 2012. E25 has been mandated in Brazil since 2007 and since 2025 Brazil requires Gasoline C to contain 30% anhydrous ethanol (E30), having previously mandated E25/E27.5. BMW, along with other major manufacturers, operates within this market. Nothing quite like built in obsolesce, to keep the wheels of industry turning.. Apologies for misleading........bleeding internet searches and disinformation Update:- It bugged me that a modern engine couldn't run on higher ethanol fuel ,especially with the BMW warning that using above E10 fuel would lead to long term engine issues and refusal of warranty claims , So I used a difference search approach, and the main issue is about the need for fitment of a High Pressure Fuel pump, to increase the effective octane levels in E30. fuel Key Considerations for Running E30 on B48 engine.: Performance Benefits: Users report noticeable power gains, particularly when using a stage 2 map, as it allows for higher octane and better timing. Fuel System Capacity: The stock Low-Pressure Fuel Pump (LPFP) can handle E30, but it operates near its maximum capacity, making it a good idea to monitor or consider upgrading the pump. Tune Requirement: A tune is recommended to properly take advantage of the higher octane; running E30 without a tune may not yield significant gains and could potentially cause a performance loss. Maintenance: More frequent oil changes and spark plug replacements are advised. Engine Suitability: The B48 is robust and frequently used in modern, high-performance applications, making it suitable for this type of fuel modification. Important: Running a higher mixture than E30 without appropriate fueling upgrades can lead to fuel pump issues or "lean" conditions. ReMinds me to dig further and question more

Nothing quite like built in obsolesce, to keep the wheels of industry turning.. Exactly - there is an ease and simplicity in all my rather agricultural vehicles. With an occasional tweak and fiddle they just go on and on!
