My car was first registered 07/02/1985. so I went to the post office in York to get it registered as Historic (40yrs old) I had all the required documents ie V5C log book,V112 mot exempt, current MOT cert. at first the assistant said I would have to. pay road tax for the year and claim it back, when I pointed out to her that it was already taxed and I am not paying twice she scuttled into the back office for advice came back and said I won't have to pay twice. then she continued to tap away at the computer which then said no, away she went to the back office and it turns out I have to wait till April 1st to register as Historic.. By now I had lost the will to live so it was straight to the Blue Bell for a few sleeves.

Had a similar issue with the Harley last year. On the 31st of March I went in to the first post office but the 'man who does tax' was off and the person there had not been trained.

Went to the second one and computer said no and the lady behind the counter argued that it was not exempt.

Went to the third one, and the lady there explained the system was 'VERY' computerised and the 'Historic Vehicle Tick box' would not appear on her selection screen until the 1st of April. Went back on the 1st and all went through OK and got a small rebate on the Tax paid in the post a few weeks later.

TBM, it seems to be a lack of training of the customer facing staff, I could not understand why the person in the back office didn't come to the counter and show the lady behind the counter how to complete the transaction.

Way back I worked with someone who had worked a lot of years in the Matlock Post Office doing road tax, might even have been a DVLA Tax Office, and when it was shut, customers used to post the applications through his house letterbox. They all knew each other.

Once I wanted to tax my MGB after a Sorn winter, to do an event on the Sunday, which I think must have been 1st of March or April.. So Saturday I called at the local Post Office. They refused to tax it in case I used it Saturday.

I went to the main Post Office a few miles away, told them what happened, they taxed it no problem.

I'm surprised you can't do it online with all the DVLA linked stuff that can check MOT & V5 data...but apparently not

Thanks for the heads up on the historic vehicle tax classification, just about to try to go through the process come May this year, as my Mog was first registered on May the first 86, though left the factory on Nov 85

Luddite, you may have to wait one more year, my car was registered Feb 1985 and I had to wait till this year 2026.

Yep, mine was an iimport, but given a registration date of Jan 1984, and I could officially declare it exempt of 1st April 2025

Thanks for the heads up folks...

Luddite, I thought that if you can prove an earlier manufactured date than the registration date then the Historic classification would be based on that earlier date.

Maybe worth checking
