Try Rimmer Bros. Definitely go to gomog. There is a GEMS manual available there plus a lot of very useful info.

Try Rimmer Bros. Definitely go to gomog. There is a GEMS manual available there plus a lot of very useful info. You rang, Sospan? Heads up. I am about to add confusion, I do not pretend to be a GEMS expert, preferring to focus on LR/Rover L-Jetronics (1984-1990) and LR/Hitachi Hotwires. eMog's anointed GEMS guru was the dear David Poole who wrote that brilliant https://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/GEMS/GEMSbyPoole.pdf on GoMoG. I believe his was the first such on the planet and was downloaded by everyone with a V8 GEMS for years. Still is. GEMS is/was an aftermarket firm with a lot of V8 variants, even within the Morgan world. The first was the earlier overseas GEMS Morgans (1996-2000), a period during which stock Plus 8s remained with the Hitachi Hotwire. These earliest GEMS, IIRC correctly, had a performant version mitigated by their MUCH heavier weight) with fuel maps overseen by Chris Lawrence. And the second overseas GEMS can be very different the first! David worked with that, though he is very knowledgeable on all versions. . The point is that I find no reference in Poole's Manual for a Code 1147 though he speaks of evaporative emissions. AI (which we all now know very much is US-variant oriented without explaining that) or google searches (same issue) lead to Land Rovers equipped with the GEMS (Generic Engine Management System) used in the 1994–1999 Discovery I, Defender, Range Rover P38) after which LR switched to Bosch Motronics. Morgan never used any Motronics in any car AFAIK. These sources (AI and google) say GEMS LR Code 1147 refers to Bank 2 (passenger's side in the UK and driver's side in the US), the Downstream O2 Sensor Heater (Lambda) after the cat, as a Circuit Malfunction. THAT issue is very common and merely means A. checking that sensor's wiring and, most likely changing the sensor (they are relatively inexpensive generic wear part). It merely means the lambda's heating feature is not functioning properly, preventing the sensor from reaching its operating temperature quickly enough. Curious,Wightmog. Which code reading device were you using? And Sospan, could please lead me to the Rimmer's GEMS Manual? Lorne

nice to hear from you again lorne thank you.I took your advice of some time ago and contacted mark adams at tornado .My car was the first of many i suspect to be set up on their new rolling road.I gave them a free reign they found my car to be running very rich...14 -18mpg rich.and only 158bhp.They fitted new injectors, knock sensors and a tornado chip. Now 237bhp and 29mpg on the trip back, its transformed the car,i have also purchased a second hand rovercomlite scanner which mark adams was going to set up for me but i had to register with blackbox in cyprus and they were short staffed that week so i didnt have the relevent codes.I used a cheapo autel maxiscanner set on landrover settings.mark adams is a very nice man and certainly knows his stuff,my car ran great on the 5 hour drive back,he told me that plenty of gunk came out of the exhaust when they set the car up.I filled up with shell petrol, which i cant get on the isle of wight,at portsmouth i didnt overfill but the wretched light came on a couple of days later, code is showing p1447 evap purge valve open or short circuit.I carry david pooles bible in the car so checked the code and it came up the same as the scanner.Car is running great otherwise. Its an old car,i expect glitches i got caught out when i first got the car and had to have it trailered off the island to get it fixed,it was mighty expensive and time consuming.I am certainly no mechanic but being where i am try at least to find whats wrong with the car before risking a trip over the water to get it fixed. There are no decent electrical specialists on the isle of wight,i learnt that at my cost last year

An experience with fault codes with my 2002 plus 8 with Gems. I had an Autel Maxiscan. The engine MIL light had come on. Maxiscan gave the reason as "random intermittent misfire". Car was running well and no misfires noticed. The system does a statistcal analysis that, when a trigger level is reached, creates a fault warning. I checked everything but it persisted occassionally. As a test I tried using V-Power higher octane fuel and the fault warning stopped. The Maxiscan was used to clear the faults. It also had a facility for live display while the engine was running. I couldn't spot any obvious reason for the misfires using this. Handy for checking many things. The car was running very well. A later fault that showed up was a downline oxygen sensor one. Maxiscan determined a downstream sensor heater fault and live running showed which one it was, i.e. a post cat sensor on one side of the twin system.. Engine ran well as that sensor was effectively checking the cat. The pre-cat sensors were fine and the engine being managed well. Finding a replacement sensor....I took the faulty one out and contacted Rimmer Bros. They couldn't recognise the numbers on it. I went back to gomog and found part numbers in the Gems manual there. Bought from Rimmers using those as they recognised them and in stock. The old sensor was a bugger to remove! My go-to MOT garage used a good torch to heat it and remove for me.

Thank god,i am not the only one who has problems with scanners and part numbers,my first encounter was with o2 sensors which i tried to replace like for like. I dont know what was worse getting them out,one was stuck solid,or two getting someone to recognise the part number which was fae 77350 from memory.Iwas told these didnt fit my 4.0 car but were for the 4.6.I couldnt get them anyway and paid a premium price for lucas ones. Most of the big part suppliers either dont recognise my reg number or their websites are only set up for land and range rovers and exclude morgans.Trying to get the proper corresponding year for a 4.0 gems range roverp38,discovery or land rover defender isnt easy but i have now got it almost right. I put the year in for year range etc rover and hope for the best, giving them my vin number sometimes throws a spanner in the works.melvyn rutter sells a lot of old spares and i have bought from him but i also try to buy from two major outlets on the internet and one on the island just to save time and a bit of money. My o2 sensor light would come on sometimes if i put the local texaco e5 in,but i took your advice and filled it up with shell on a trip down to brands hatch morgan,by the time i got there the light had gone off, there are no shell garages on the isle of wight so i do the 45mile round trip to tesco to fill up with their momentum petrol and have had no problems o2 wise since, what used to use3 gallons but since the remap is just over 1 and a bit...with what i have spent on the remap etc i should get my money back in about 200 years...what a bargain

nice to hear from you again lorne AH!!! You are Wightmog here! 237bhp from the 158bhp you had is truly impressive!! Happy Mark worked out for you. He is brilliant. Did you meet the guy? I am NOT a GEMS expert, preferring to focus on my beloved LR/Rover L-Jetronics (1984-1990) and LR/Rover Hitachi Hotwires. You can see why! GEMS, an private aftermarket firm, had many LR variants even if we do not speak of Mark Adams' magic touch or chips. I know of three very different GEMS variants used just within the Morgan gamut, even a performant Chris Lawrence one for Overseas GEMS (1998-2000), a period during which stock UK Plus 8s remained with the Hitachi Hotwire. (Chris was, at the time, working on the first Aero) All these variants are different from each other and Land Rover. Interesting to know that even something supposedly generic, like the oxygen sensor, can cause grief. Thanks for that. Noted. Personally I find scanners unreliable unless they are specific to the subject engine management. However, they are unavoidable these days. I DO like the one MMC had made for all their models specially. https://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/CodeReaderMMC.jpg I wouldn't own a GEMS Morgan without a scanner/programmer made for GEMS specifically and Morgan hopefully. EFI combustion efficiency is fantastic, but it became too much of a enforcement arm of today's legislatures. I get so much from my simple L-Jet, though I have made it very bespoke! I only wish I had 5% of the money spent for the wrong GEMS components based on inter-market advice! Yes. That Cyprus company can be a life saver. Good to "see" you too. Lorne

I have one O2 sensor ( new, unused) stored somewhere. Bought 2 from Rimmers when ordering as a "just in case" precaution. Mine were the same for pre cat and post cat so any future issues could be fixed quicker. The Maxiscan was usefull as it showed the voltage through each O2 sensor. They behaved as normal when a run test was done but the faulty one had wildly fluctuating voltage readings. Replaced, test re done and all ok. The downside with my Maxiscan is it is no longer supported for software updates so might not work with newer cars. I might connect it to the Plus Four to see if it works. If not then it would be sold on as not needed. I need a clear out...strobe timing light, Colourtune, Moto Lita leather steering wheel, couple of other items too.
