Maybe worth checking

You can, I know someone who owned an import that sat for a least a year unsold, but he could prove from factory records the prior to UK registration, actual build date

Thanks for the update, much appreciated. I have a plasticised chassis record supplied by the MMC with the chassis and engine number original specification and the date it left the factory being Nov 85.

Looks like there may be a degree of luck involved re PO staff understanding of the regs, though I guess it is not something they deal with regularly..

That was exactly my experience when I did it - see here: Historic Vehicle Tax Exemption.

In short, you have to do it at a Post Office from the 1st April after the date your vehicle reached 40.

Bugger. My car hits 40 this June and tax is due in November. I suppose I'm going to have to cough up the £360 and wait until April 2027 to register it as historic.

When I did mine, the refund was reasonably quick (not much consolation though!)

Or even less then 6 months - sorn it when it's 40 online, refund will be automatic, then re-tax just after at a post office ?
