My Stealer called me before Christmas (25) and told me that the factory has issued a recall on my '21 Plus Four to have the starter motor replaced, so I would I like it done?
"Yes OK thankyou very much" I said, and they said thy would let me know when they had the part.
So now we are in April, and they still don't have the replacement I was wondering if anyone else is in the same position?
I guess it's a problem for all the BMW engines from that period as I found a couple of mentions of BMW starter issues elsewhere - so presumably Morgans are a lower priority,,,,

This could be a wider issue effecting the Plus Six B58 engine as well.

. BMW B58 engine vehicles in the USA (and thousands more worldwide) from 2020–2024 due to a fire risk caused by a faulty starter motor that can overheat, even while parked. Affected models include various 2–7 Series and X3–X6, plus the Toyota Supra. Dealers will replace the starter for free, with owner notifications beginning March 2026.
This video explains the details of the BMW starter recall and the risk involved:

Message from Morgan Motor Company re 2020-21 Plus Fours
Post by Gill Bevan [20169] » Fri Dec 05, 2025 4:37 pm

Hi all we have been asked to pass on this message to 2020-2021 owners from John Bower:

We have a warranty campaign running to replace the starter motors on early Plus Four cars. These are cars built between May 2020 and February 2021. attached is a list of the cars affected in the UK. Even though these cars are out of warranty, we would still replace the starter motors free of charge to any owners.

We really recommend that these starter motors are changed.
Any Morgan owners with affected cars can contact their preferred Morgan dealer and get their cars booked in for the job. We have sent starter motors out to all of the dealers who sold the original cars, but it is always best to contact the dealer first and make an appointment.

The job is not long, but the dealer will tell the owner how long they need the car for. Within a day assuming the new starter motor is still available with them.

I spoke with Mark Baldwin at MMC earlier today on a separate topic, but took the opportunity to ask him about the starter motor issue and whether any Plus Six cars could be affected. He said the issue does not impact the Plus Six and, in fact, of the 120 odd Plus Fours that are in the recall only a few of these were showing signs that they needed a replacement starter.

I live in Malvern, and had the starter motor of my 2020 Plus Four replaced at the factory in early March having booked it in to have the work done soon after the recall was notified last year. They made no mention of the replacement starter motors being in short supply.

I went looking for the starter motor but didn't find an obvious item.Apparently Bosch ones are fine but Valeo made the suspect units.
Does anyone know where it sits? I did look at pictures I have of under the car & I'm guessing that is it by the gearbox , so a grovel underneath is called for.

I did also find the alternator and another pump / compressor see pics. As I don't have AC is it the water or oil pump?

Look above the orange cable cover John. The solenoid is to the left.

From Google AI:

On the BMW B58 engine, the starter is [* located on the passenger side (RH) of the engine bay,] mounted low down on the transmission bell housing. It is accessed from underneath the car by removing the large aluminum splash shield/underbody tray, rather than from above the engine.

Key Access & Removal Details:
Access: Lift the vehicle on ramps/jack stands and remove the aluminum undertray (secured with 8mm and 16mm bolts).
Location Detail: Situated low on the passenger side where the engine meets the transmission, generally near the alternator level.
Fasteners: The starter is secured by three external Torx (E-Torx) bolts.
Hidden Bolt: A key tip from DIYers is that the third bolt is hidden inside a rubber damper at the front of the starter.
Safety Requirement: Crucial to disconnect the main battery in the trunk (and the auxiliary battery, if equipped) before starting, as the main power wire is always live

* this is from a US site and therefore it would, fairly obviously, be on the driver's side for RHD Mogs
