Considering the lack of weather proofing in the car itself, I would recommend something water tight. A motorcycle sat nav or a Sony Tablet Z3 Compact. Contemplating the last one myself.

I use a Garmin 660 ( waterproof & from my biking days) perfect in a Morgan of any kind. About �200 as a new/refurbished unit from various retailers.
All waterproof/ Bluetooth/ carries photos'/ music etc etc all singing and dancing sat nav

I can highly recommend the Garmin Zumo 660
This device allows you to make your route's at home on your computer via Garmin Base Camp.

With Garmin Base Camp you can design your own route's via the most interesting points or roads. You can change the route as many times you like. You can see the distance and appr. time. For the complete route as well for the sections. You can see your route on Google Earth and even via Street View.
This all at home !

Last year we designed our 6000 Km Thailand tour with our HD's this way at home. When driving it guided us every day is to the front door of our hotel even in the most remote area's.
Not only that.We could sometimes also see via Street View how the hotel looks on the outside.

It's also very much fun to design your own route. Much more fun than telling your GPS to where you want to go. Now you can choose nice winding roads.

After you saved the route on your computer you connect the Garmin 660 to the computer and click on the button: "send to device" that's all !

In the Morgan I use simple ear plugs headphone to hear what the directions are.
But you can also see it via the screen.

In Holland you can buy a superb instruction DVD from Mr. GPS to learn all the insider tricks what you can do with Garmin Base Camp. But I'm not sure if you also can get it in English. You even can get personal support via phone or mail.

You will be surprised how many beautiful roads you can discover in the area where you want to go.

I've got the 660 garmen but I believe the 550 is a better model having used the 660 across Europe .

I also back up with a iPhone using the IMAP (Maps) app installed in route mode with data roaming on. Set price European contract through Vodafone (I think Orange is slightly cheaper)

With the iPhone it's highly accurate and has provided excellent service right across Europe and the USA without needing extra database updates..

http://motoplaner.de Is a fantastic site to build your custom routes for the Garmin - convert the route into useable file as then download them into the Garmin. The site is German but has an English language option but is not user friendly on iPad truely fantastic on a laptop or PC

My friend uses the 550 and it doesn't suffer from waypoint refresh reloads every time you move onto the next waypoint like the 660. The phone doesn't do any of that, it just simply re-routes if you move off course otherwise it's continuous map. - need to maintain phone charge though.

Ultimate additions also provide the waterproof case and power leads needed for motorcycle/M3W use of the iphone

Garmin Zumo 340LM for me. It's beautifully made, waterproof and has lifetime map updates. The audio instructions are quite loud but you'll still need an earphone of some sort (plug-in or bluetooth) in the 3 Wheeler.

It uses RAM based mounting hardware which is first rate. Quite a consideration if you have a 3 Wheeler!



I have to admit that I don't find the Zumo as intuitive as my old TomTom but it's not too bad once you get used to it.

It comes with a power lead (incorporating a 5 volt step-down circuit) designed to be hard-wired into the bike wiring harness. I have attached an regular accessory plug to this so that it can be easily moved from vehicle to vehicle. [I have also obtained a suction type ball mount with a massive 3" sucker for the tin-top's windscreen.]



I'm just getting to grips with the BaseCamp route planning software which seems very powerful. There are several useful tutorials on YouTube to help with this.

They are pretty pricey - I got a 'refurbished' one off eBay which is effectively brand new but without the retail packaging. If your budget can stretch to the Zumo 390LM it has a 'Curvy Road' feature that can default to twisty (i.e. good driving) roads wherever possible. Great idea but quite pricey...

Just resurrecting this (very) old thread! I’ve been flip-flopping between Tomtom & Garmin for years and currently have a Tomtom Rider 500 which is easy & familiar to use but not easy to see in bright sunlight and also doesn’t have the facility for waypoints on a downloaded route which is a real negative. So, I’m now considering the Garmin Zumo XT2 along with Raw-Rides' excellent steering column mount. I’m attracted by the larger, brighter 6” screen and of course the waypoint ability.
Would anyone like to share first hand knowledge of the XT2? Is it really easy to see in bright sunshine?

I can't speak to the XT2 but the XT is certainly very readable in bright sunlight.

Many of us use the XT with the benefits of being the ability to flag and identify stops along the route and share routes from device to device by Bluetooth.

If that pic is of Richard's Raw-Rides car then for scale I'm pretty certain that's an XT not an XT2.

I too have been revisiting sat nav options - with my old Garmin proving way less useful than the modern phone apps. An old splash-proof Android phone should run Google Maps or Waze very nicely, and connect to your main phone via WiFi hotspot -OR- invest in a cheap SIM card. (And yes, 3D printing is great for new mount options!)...

Another Phone convert here. I use a Quadlock mount on my dash, mounted so that the phone is easily visible and within reach. A single AirPod in my right ear makes the instructions very audible whilst still letting me hear what's going on around me.

I too use Google Maps on my iPhone mounted to the dash with the phone providing everything else I need, so much more convenient.
