Many thanks - mine's a pre 2006 car so has a slightly different arrangement, but looking in the parts book the general principle seems to be holding 2 firmly, unscrew 1 - I'll give it a try. I'm slightly suspicious though as on my handbrake it looks like 1 is secured by a long thin, steel spring pin. But as the handbrake was ineffective anyway, I guess if I break it, I'm not really any worse off...

Not shown fully in image is the long threaded studding attaching release knob to spring loaded pawl (5). The pin (4) appears to be only an attachment point for pawl spring.
